Outdated but still interesting

Turnbull's book is clearly outdated now by more recent scholarship, but it's still a handy reference for classical guitarists interested in the history of their instrument, as well as giving an insight into attitudes during the hay-days of the likes of Williams and Bream, when both artists were still considered young talents. It is written with an optimism and excitement now rarely encountered among guitarists, and comes as a healthy reminder of why many of us dedicate ourselves to this instrument.
The foremost criticism I would now be tempted to level at the book is its treatment of the history of the guitar as evolutionary, leading from the inferior past to the superior future. For example, the removal of double-courses from Baroque guitars is described as an "improvement" rather than a "change" reflecting shifting aesthetics. But this is small criticism for an otherwise highly readable, informative and succinct history of the classical guitar.
