No book has been published specifically on the role of Congress in the role of Congress in the relationship between the two countries during this period, though there are many that deal with the subject or aspects of it. Thus this book is sui generis.
In one of the more interesting parts of the book, the author presents a case for the importance of Congress supporting Nixon's openings to China; many writers have assumed Nixon did this on his own. This book provides a useful perspective to the study of Beijing-Washington interactions by highlighting the contribution of Congress. Guangqiu Xu has conducted extensive research in American archives and incorporated recently available Chinese primary sources. As a result, he is able to recapture not only how Congress intervened in the shaping of Washington's policy toward Beijing but also how the Chinese communists responded to the congressional interventions. About the Author
Dr. Guangqiu Xu received his bachelor's degree in Chinese history and his master's degree in modern Chinese history from Sun Yat-sen University. He received his doctoral degree in U.S. history from the University of Maryland, College Park. His first book, War Wings: The United States and Chinese Military Aviation, 1929-1949, was published in 2001. In addition, he has published many articles in journals such as Modern Asian Studies, Journal of Contemporary History, and Asian Survey. Dr. Xu has taught at Friends University in Kansas since August of 2002.
