California History Action Summer 2015 This thorough guidebook identifies and describes in some depth museums in the eleven counties bordering San Francisco and Monterey Bays. The book's main section lists museums alphabetically and provides their location, contact information, hours, costs, gift shop, their permanent exhibits, their strong or unique features, and any research facilities they offer.
The book begins with a series of short chapters organized by periods in California's development. Each of these chapters contains a brief overview essay followed by a checklist of museums relevant to the era. Checklists include a place for museum staff to sign, certifying schoolchildren's visits.
Other chapters list museums by county and by such categories as famous literary figures, and business successes. Other categories include railroads, ships, agriculture, mines, firefighters, historic homes, historic sites, and scientific discoveries. It helps that the lists cross-reference many of the museums: Lick Observatory is listed as an historic site, and, separately, as a place of scientific discovery, and the Haas-Lilienthal house is listed both as an historic house and as the home of a business tycoon. Museums are not limited to California topics: world history sites include the Rosicrucian's Egyptian Museum in San Jose, the Hakone Japanese Gardens in Saratoga, and the Hoover Institute at Stanford University in Palo Alto. The book is a wonderful compilation, and anyone interested in California history will profit from owning it. One can only marvel at Mr. Di Giacomo's dedication--and stamina!--in creating it for us. Many museumshighlight the role that transportation has played in the region. TheBay Area has its share of train, trolley, automobile, aircraft,fire-fighting, and nautical museums with a wide variety of historicalvehicles that are in well-preserved condition.
There are alsomuseums related to industry and commerce. Mining, in particular, hashad a huge impact on the region and there are sites where you can learnabout gold, silver, coal, sand, and quicksilver mines. In addition,there are many places that commemorate the area's agriculturalheritage. Visitors can see antique farm equipment, historical farmproducts, and historic structures. In some cases, there are workingfarms in which farming is still done using traditional methods.
Furthermore, there are many fine museums that are dedicated to particular ethnicgroups and the roles that they have played in the area. The region hassome serious academic museums, such as those dedicated to art history,anthropology, or archeology, but there are also quirky pop culturemuseums that preserve the history of such items as blue jeans, cartoons, silent movies, and popular toys. There is even a museum dedicated toAgnews Mental Hospital.
In short, there is something for everyone.Whether you want to see a large, state-of-the-art comprehensive museumor a small, eclectic collection of "old junk", there is a museum tosuit your tastes in the Bay Area. Many are free or low-cost and make agreat family outing, an affordable vacation destination, or are just aninteresting way to fill a free afternoon.
Unfortunately, findinginformation about this wide variety of museums and historical sites canbe difficult. Some of the sites are open at inconvenient or infrequenttimes. Many of the smaller museums are staffed by volunteers, and ifthe volunteers are unavailable, the museum may not be open at theadvertised times. A few do not even have webpages. Reaching the staffby phone can be difficult in some locations. Popular tour books oftenonly mention the major attractions and leave some of the minor sitesout. Some of the few books that have previously been written on thissubject are already out of date or have a different scope.
That iswhy I wrote this book. As a history buff and a history teacher wholoves to travel, I found it difficult to find information about localmuseums. I have visited almost every place in this book personally.When I began to visit various historical sites, I heard some commoncomplaints from the staff members. Many mentioned being under-funded,dependent on volunteers with limited availability, and being short ondisplay space. They all felt like they had many interesting items andstories to share with the public, but many people in their own community did not know their museums even existed. This book meets this need.It is designed to bring together the friendly and knowledgeable staffmembers from these museums and historical sites, who are passionateabout the importance of their facilities, with the general public thatneeds to know more about local history.
The events that tookplace in California have truly shaped the entire world, and any visitorto its museums and historical sites can learn from them, whether he orshe is a California native or not. Only by visiting these sites can one get a true appreciation for how important California and its people are to the rest of the world.
Finally, I'd like to offer a briefdescription of the structure or organization of the book. Each chapterin this book will have a brief historical overview of a time period,followed by a listing of the sites that best relate to that era. A funactivity for your family or students is to make a quest to see all ofthe sites for a particular era. Checklists have been provided for eachchapter with a place for a museum staff member to sign off when you have completed the quest. This would be an ideal activity to conduct when a young person is studying the era in a particular grade in school. This would help them immensely if they have a project or paper due on aparticular historical subject. However, these quests are primarilydesigned to be fun and educational. If you don't make it to every lastsite on the list, not to worry, you will still learn a lot from visiting several sites.
