California History Action Summer 2015 This thorough guidebook identifies and describes in some depth museums in the eleven counties bordering San Francisco and Monterey Bays. The book's main section lists museums alphabetically and provides their location, contact information, hours, costs, gift shop, their permanent exhibits, their strong or unique features, and any research facilities they offer.
The book begins with a series of short chapters organized by periods in California's development. Each of these chapters contains a brief overview essay followed by a checklist of museums relevant to the era. Checklists include a place for museum staff to sign, certifying schoolchildren's visits.
Other chapters list museums by county and by such categories as famous literary figures, and business successes. Other categories include railroads, ships, agriculture, mines, firefighters, historic homes, historic sites, and scientific discoveries. It helps that the lists cross-reference many of the museums: Lick Observatory is listed as an historic site, and, separately, as a place of scientific discovery, and the Haas-Lilienthal house is listed both as an historic house and as the home of a business tycoon. Museums are not limited to California topics: world history sites include the Rosicrucian's Egyptian Museum in San Jose, the Hakone Japanese Gardens in Saratoga, and the Hoover Institute at Stanford University in Palo Alto. TheBay Area has its share of train, trolley, automobile, aircraft,fire-fighting, and nautical museums with a wide variety of historicalvehicles that are in well-preserved condition.
There are alsomuseums related to industry and commerce. Mining, in particular, hashad a huge impact on the region and there are sites where you can learnabout gold, silver, coal, sand, and quicksilver mines. In addition,there are many places that commemorate the area's agriculturalheritage. Visitors can see antique farm equipment, historical farmproducts, and historic structures. In some cases, there are workingfarms in which farming is still done using traditional methods.
Furthermore, there are many fine museums that are dedicated to particular ethnicgroups and the roles that they have played in the area. The region hassome serious academic museums, such as those dedicated to art history,anthropology, or archeology, but there are also quirky pop culturemuseums that preserve the history of such items as blue jeans, cartoons, silent movies, and popular toys. There is even a museum dedicated toAgnews Mental Hospital.
In short, there is something for everyone.Whether you want to see a large, state-of-the-art comprehensive museumor a small, eclectic collection of "old junk", there is a museum tosuit your tastes in the Bay Area. Many are free or low-cost and make agreat family outing, an affordable vacation destination, or are just aninteresting way to fill a free afternoon.
Unfortunately, findinginformation about this wide variety of museums and historical sites canbe difficult. Some of the sites are open at inconvenient or infrequenttimes. Many of the smaller museums are staffed by volunteers, and ifthe volunteers are unavailable, the museum may not be open at theadvertised times. A few do not even have webpages. Reaching the staffby phone can be difficult in some locations. Popular tour books oftenonly mention the major attractions and leave some of the minor sitesout. Some of the few books that have previously been written on thissubject are already out of date or have a different scope.
That iswhy I wrote this book. As a history buff and a history teacher wholoves to travel, I found it difficult to find information about localmuseums. I have visited almost every place in this book personally.When I began to visit various historical sites, I heard some commoncomplaints from the staff members. Many mentioned being under-funded,dependent on volunteers with limited availability, and being short ondisplay space. They all felt like they had many interesting items andstories to share with the public, but many people in their own community did not know their museums even existed. This book meets this need.It is designed to bring together the friendly and knowledgeable staffmembers from these museums and historical sites, who are passionateabout the importance of their facilities, with the general public thatneeds to know more about local history.
The events that tookplace in California have truly shaped the entire world, and any visitorto its museums and historical sites can learn from them, whether he orshe is a California native or not. Only by visiting these sites can one get a true appreciation for how important California and its people are to the rest of the world.
Finally, I'd like to offer a briefdescription of the structure or organization of the book. Each chapterin this book will have a brief historical overview of a time period,followed by a listing of the sites that best relate to that era. A funactivity for your family or students is to make a quest to see all ofthe sites for a particular era. Checklists have been provided for eachchapter with a place for a museum staff member to sign off when you have completed the quest. This would be an ideal activity to conduct when a young person is studying the era in a particular grade in school. This would help them immensely if they have a project or paper due on aparticular historical subject. However, these quests are primarilydesigned to be fun and educational. If you don't make it to every lastsite on the list, not to worry, you will still learn a lot from visiting several sites.

Stephen Northcutt and his coauthors note in the superb Intrusion Signatures and Analysis that there's really no such thing as an attack that's never been seen before. The book documents scores of attacks on systems of all kinds, showing exactly what security administrators should look for in their logs and commenting on attackers' every significant command. This is largely a taxonomy of hacker strategies and the tools used to implement them. As such, it's an essential tool for people who want to take a scientific, targeted approach to defending information systems. It's also a great resource for security experts who want to earn their Certified Intrusion Analyst ratings from the Global Incident Analysis Center (GIAC)--it's organized, in part, around that objective.

The book typically introduces an attack strategy with a real-life trace--usually attributed to a real administrator--from TCPdump, Snort, or some sort of firewall (the trace's source is always indicated). The trace indicates what is happening (i.e., what weakness the attacker is trying to exploit) and the severity of the attack (using a standard metric that takes into account the value of the target, the attack's potential to do damage, and the defenses arrayed against the attack). The attack documentation concludes with recommendations on how defenses could have been made stronger. These pages are great opportunities to learn how to read traces and take steps to strengthen your systems' defenses.

The book admirably argues that security administrators should take some responsibility for the greater good of the Internet by, for example, using egress filtering to prevent people inside their networks from spoofing their source address (thus defending other networks from their own users' malice). About the Author

Stephen Northcutt is the author of several books including: Incident Handling Step-by-Step, Intrusion Detection: Shadow Style (both by the SANS Institute) and Network Intrusion Detection: An Analyst's Handbook (New Riders) as well as a contributing editor for Securing NT Step-by-Step (The SANS Institute.) He was the original developer of the Shadow intrusion detection system and served as the leader of the Department of Defenses Shadow Intrusion Detection Team for two years. Mr. Northcutt was the Chief for Information Warfare at the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization and currently serves as the Director for GIAC Training and Certification for the SANS Institute. Mark Cooper graduated from UMIST in 1991 with a BS in Microelectronic Systems Engineering. Currently working as a security consultant, he reached his current position after spending many years as a software engineer and then as a UNIX Systems Administrator. He is now a SANS GIAC Certified Intrusion Analyst. Matt Fearnow is a Network/ Security Administrator for Macmillan USA. Before working at Macmillan, he served in the US Navy as a Sonar Technician aboard submarines. In his current duties he constantly utilizes his SANS GIAC certification and is a frequent contributor to the SANS GIAC website. Matt was the first to establish categories for the traces from completed GIAC practicals. Karen Frederick is an Infosec Engineer for Sun Tzu Security in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She earned her bachelor's degree in computer science from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, and she is currently completing her master's degree thesis in intrusion detection from the University of Idaho's Engineering Outreach program. Karen holds several certifications, including Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer + Internet, Check Point Certified Security Administrator and GIAC Certified Intrusion Analyst.

When a good book is worth a thousand experiences!

This is the best book about Intrusion Signatures published yet.
I teach computer security at a local university, and with the only help of this book, I could take care of all the practical aspects of my last course. If you have already a good background on this field, and read and understand thoroughly the book, then you can afford any related security certification test.
Chapters 3 through 17, present several well documented cases, which, in turn, are discussed following the same standard:

- Probability the Source Address Was spoofed
- Attack Description
- Attack Mechanism
- Correlations
- Evidence of Active Targeting
- Severity
- Defense Recommendations
- Questions
Chapter 1 introduces the reader to Analysis of Logs (including Snort, Tcpdump, and Syslog), IDS, and Firewalls. Even being a quick review, it is quite useful, though.
Chapter 2 explains the way the cases are studied.

A good start, but proceed with caution: uncertain analysis

Disclaimer: I withdrew a chapter from this book, and my words appear on p. 25. "Intrusion Signatures" tries to share the collective wisdom of SANS GIAC certification candidates, tempered by more experienced SANS editors. I applaud their intentions, but the uneven analysis and commentary warrants faint praise. New analysts flying solo should not read this book. Analysts with a guru to consult should get his or her input before trusting the book's interpretations.
Examples: (1) Eric Hacker expertly discusses a Windows password problem on pp. 77-85, but a significant trace is missing on p. 81. This causes the following dozen traces to not match their respective explanations. Would a new analyst notice? (2) Several times (p. 87, etc.) the authors fail to realize "public" is a common default SNMP "read" community string, while "private" is the "read/write" counterpart. This mistake is crucial elsewhere in the book. (3) The editors call a clear example of round-trip-time determination a "half-open DNS scan." It's ok for certification students to make judgement errors, but SANS editors should explain why that view isn't correct. (4) A very questionable "SYN flood" trace in ch. 10 doesn't match the "reproduction" of the same trace in the question-and-answer appendix -- that one's missing a crucial packet! (5) A "spoofed FTP request" in ch.11 looks like an active FTP data attempt to me. That concept is explained on p. 329, but the authors don't apply the same reasoning to ch.11's example. Why?
On the positive side, I was impressed by Mark Cooper's work on buffer overflows and ICMP redirects. Some of the student work is also first-rate, but it may be tough for new readers to make the necessary distinctions.
The authors owe it to the target audience (new analysts) to deliver accurate explanations. Different interpretations are expected, but errors like those listed require scrutiny. The work is sincere -- I just can't recommend this book to inexperienced intrusion detectors.

About the Author
Howard Lindzon is cofounder and CEO of StockTwits—an idea network for traders and investors known as the "Facebook of Finance"—recently named "one of the top 10 most innovative companies in web" by FastCompany and one of the "50 best websites" by Time magazine. He has over twenty years experience in the financial community acting in both an entrepreneurial and investing capacity; and is the Managing Partner of Social Leverage, a holding company that invests in early stage web businesses. Mr. Lindzon has tremendous insight into new media and is a very active angel investor in the financial and internet business sectors, invested and involved with over thirty companies. He created Wallstrip, and over 400 original web video shows, which was purchased by CBS Corp. in 2007. Shameful! What have you contributed to your readers?

This book was incredibly disappointing. The book promises to teach you 40 actionable trading setups that you can use. The editors of this book (the book is compiled by editors from the writings of many authors/traders) start each section by praising the trader who is supposedly going to teach you the trade setup and then that trader starts to talk about himself and his experiences as a trader, if that trader has a company, he throws in a plug for it in the same section. The trader then talks to you about a couple of trades that he has made in the past using his set up. But what is his setup?? You will find yourself asking this question over and over again. One of my favorites is a guy called Michael Bigger who talks about value investing and gives examples of companies he bought and made money selling but never gives you any setups?? He never shares any debt to equity ratios, percentages of earnings growth that he looks for, or any "accounting homework" that he does prior to buying a stock. He shares NOTHING! Another time waster is Eddy Elfenbein who absolutely shares nothing!!!!! And the day traders and swing traders are just as bad. So many of them have basically shared the same thing. Consolidation breakouts, moving averages, RSI, MACD, wedges, and my favorite, nothing! The generic setups that maybe found here are half-assed you can't really use them. They haven't provided enough information to you so that you may use them. Remember they didn't share their edge. They just gave you the generic part. The book has probably about three setups that were useful and the authors behind them were sincere in sharing and were not trying to hide their edge. People like John Lee are traders I respect. Furthermore, please be careful when you read the five star reviews of this book; one of the reviewers is actually non other than the editor himself! (you can check for yourself). With the large number of authors for this book it's hard to tell who some of these reviewers are. It's a shame but this book only serves the editors; it provides them with a platform to stroke the egos of traders who contribute to their website. The editors get to make money publishing what the traders share without them having to do much work! too bad in the process of self service the "value" to the reader is lost.

Great Idea but content is crap
By bus books
I jumped at the idea to read about other traders and their styles. I thought this would be like the series where they interview hedge fund guys but only these are real people. Well they interview them but each chapter doesn't follow any structure. And some of them are down right short. You can barely gain any additional information from readying this book. The best chapter is stockbee who I now regularly follow. Buy this thing used or get it at the library.

Hold on a second.

I was really looking forward to this book coming out. I preordered it and even got a bit elated when Amazon said it was going to show up 2 days before the original ship date.

The book was a very easy read, I think I was finished it in an evening or so. I liked how the book gave a nice back story to each of the traders it showcased. The problem I had was the biography was as long or longer the trade setups. The only real actionable trade setups were from @superbee and @upsidetrader. The rest were less than actionable.

If your looking for a book to help you learn a trading style. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. If you looking for something fun to read and want to lean bits and pieces of other trading styles well then buy a used copy.

Being a professional trader for over 10 years, I found every little "Edge" in owning this book.
