From the Back Cover
Hundreds of books have been written on the art of writing. Here at last is a book by two professional editors to teach writers the techniques of the editing trade that turn promising manuscripts into published novels and short stories. Renni Browne and Dave King are two of the country's best-known independent editors. In their years as president and senior editor of The Editorial Department, they have edited the work of many writers - including bestselling authors - before the manuscripts went out to agents or publishers. Over half the manuscripts worked on to completion eventually got published, and over half that number were first novels. In this book Browne and King teach you, the writer, how to apply the editing techniques they have developed to your own manuscript, in order to bring your manuscript to its fullest potential. Chapters on dialogue, exposition, interior monologue and other techniques take you through the same processes an expert fiction editor would go through to perfect your manuscript. Each point is illustrated with examples, many drawn from the hundreds of books Browne and King have edited. Every chapter contains hands-on exercises to help you apply these techniques to your own work. And illustrations by New Yorker cartoonist George Booth keep everything in perspective.

A Summary By the Authors Themselves...
By Ralph White
This is a verbatim handout in a clinic the authors taught in 1990 in New York. Each item on the following self-editing checklist is a deal-breaker for your blockbuster. Your manuscript likely has many of them. Buy this essential book; understand what the checklist items refer to, and start self-editing.

1) SHOW(ing) AND TELL(ing): As you re-read your work, watch for places where you tell your readers about personality traits, situations, or emotions, rather than showing them through actions and events.

2) DIALOGUE DIRECTIVES: Watch like a hawk for places where you've explained your dialog. Watch for "ly" adverbs and verbs for speech other than "said." And rethink your paragraphing.

3) SEE HOW IT SOUNDS: Read a passage of dialogue, narration, or description aloud and listen for the unconscious changes.

4) EASY BEATS: Beware of including either beats that describe dialogue or so many beats that the dialogue is choppy.

5) INTERIOR MONOLOGUE: As with beats, make sure your interior monologue isn't obtrusive or actually an explanation in disguise. Also, dispense with stage directions whenever possible.

6) SOPHISTICATION: Watch for "as" and "-ing" constructions and change the sentences that don't actually require these constructions.

7) BREAKING UP IS EASY TO DO: Break up lengthy sections of narration or descriptions with frequent paragraphs, or with dialogue, or even with the occasional one or two line paragraph.

8) POINT OF VIEW: Watch for places where you change point of view in the middle of a scene. If the change is necessary, insert a linespace and start a new scene.

9) ONCE IS USUALLY ENOUGH: Look for places in which you've accomplished essentially the same thing twice. Decide which of the two is strongest and cut the weaker phrase, sentence, or entire scene.

10) VOICE: As you read over your work, highlight the passages that please you most. Then highlight the passages that displease you and work to turn the one into the other.

11) PROPORTION: As ou read, ask yourself what interests you the most. Then take a look at what's left and decide whether it's really needed.

12) CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONAND EXPOSITION: Don't describe your characters all at once. Let your readers meet them slowly, naturally.

13) DON'T LET THEM SEE YOU SWEAT: Beware of words like "very" and "rather," strings of adjectives, fancy imagery, overuse of italics, and exclamation points.

14) ELLIPSIS: Check your work for blow-by-blow descriptions and work to condense them.

Straightforward, easy read with tons of examples. Highly recommended!
By Mom
Best money I've spent on a writing book. While King's On Writing is still my favorite in the genre, that's more memoir and muse than how-to. THIS book takes you from point a (rough draft) to point b (ready to find an agent and/or professional editor). It does assume you've already written your rough first draft, of course, though I don't think it's useless info even if you haven't.

The book is an easy read. Not ponderous nor pretentious. Just straightforward advice filled with real-world examples - from client submissions they've received as editors, to famous works, to gems from their editing workshops. The authors have a clear voice: upbeat, and to-the-point. It's accessible to every writer: from the seasoned and published writer with the English degree, to the brand newbie.

Each chapter closes with a point-by-point review of what's been covered followed by exercises that you can edit yourself (then "check your work" against their answers in the back of the book).

You may not agree with every stylistic choice the authors suggest, but, they are professionals, and if your goal is getting your book published, then this book will certainly bring you closer to that goal.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Best book for fixing your novel
By rgartee
If you're a fiction writer then you need this book. It isn't one of those books that tell you how to develop your plot and characters. This is for when you think you're finished, before you submit it to anyone. Two of the top professional editors tell fiction writers straight out what they look for and what they have to change to make a novel publishable. Moreover, they tell the writer how to fix writing problems before they ever get to an editor and how to prevent them in the future. Once you've self-edited your manuscript with guidance of these editors you not only have a better book, but you will have made habits that will improve your fiction writing for your next book as well.

The Kalevala, by Elias Lonnrot

The Kalevala describes Finnish nature very minutely and very beautifully. Grimm says that no poem is to be compared with it in this respect. A deeper and more esoteric meaning of the Kalevala, however, points to a contest between Light and Darkness. The numerous myths of the poem are likewise full of significance and beauty, and the Kalevala should be read between the lines, in order that the full meaning of this great epic may be comprehended. The whole poem is replete with the most fascinating folk-lore about the mysteries of nature, the origin of things, the enigmas of human tears, and, true to the character of a national epic, it represents not only the poetry, but the entire wisdom and accumulated experience of a nation. One of the most notable characteristics of the Finnish mythology is the interdependence among the gods. The Finnish deities, like the ancient gods of Italy and Greece, are generally represented in pairs. They have their individual abodes and are surrounded by their respective families. The Sun and the Moon each have a consort, and sons and daughters. Only two sons of Piv appear in The Kalevala, one comes to aid of Wainamoinen in his efforts to destroy the mystic Fire-fish, by throwing from the heavens to the girdle of the hero, a "magic knife, silver-edged, and golden-handled;" the other son, Panu, the Fire-child, brings back to Kalevala the fire that bad been stolen by Louhi, the wicked hostess of Pohyola.

Song of Power
By OAKSHAMAN
_There is an elegant, powerful simplicity to this epic tale, no matter what language you read it in. The symbols transcend both language and time. There is nothing contrived here. Such a tale could not be conterfeited by a modern mind.

_At the center of the entire epic is Vainamoinen, the singer at the world's dawn. Here is the archetype for the wizard- the first and greatest among shamans. Before Merlin, before Taliesin, before Math, before Manannan, there was Vainamoinen, Eternal Seer.

_Something real and vital carries over even in translation. Reading this book on a cold winter's night you can taste the sea and smell the forest. You can identify with the characters even though they have godlike powers, because they also have trades that they live by (Vainamoinen is a boatbuilder, Ilmarinen a smith, Joukahainen builds his own crossbows, etc.) These Godlike beings lived simple lives close to the earth. And simple wisdom is powerful wisdom. Yet, there is also so much more of the old, deep legends and symbols buried in these lines. You can tell that they were preserved long after the long lines of singers had ceased to know their original meanings.

_The ancient Finns believed in the power of words, and the greater power of songs. There is still power here. Or as the epic says:

Words shall not be hid

nor spells be buried;

might shall not sink underground

though the mighty go.

Clear layout, easily navigable
By eekmoo
I was really pleased to see that this version of the Kalevala has the correct line breaks instead of having it all run in succession. It makes for a very legible version. I also like that the table of contents links directly to the different poems making it very easily navigable.

get another printing
By Anna E.
Don't get me wrong; I love the Kalevala and I'm a big fan of Crawford's translation. But this particular printing has been very poorly executed. (I should've been suspicious when I saw Lonnrot's name misspelled on the cover.) The text is full of careless spelling and punctuation errors, and it's not formatted in lines as the poetry was originally. It'll do fine for reading, but it makes a poor addition to one's library.

The Book of SHE: Your Heroine's Journey into the Heart of Feminine Power, by Sara Avant Stover

Women face many challenging transitions on the pilgrimage from girlhood through womanhood: menses, love and heartbreak, motherhood, menopause. Devoid of a central narrative, these rites of passage too often happen in shame and secrecy, leaving women doubting their personal power and self-worth. Bestselling author and founder of The Way of the Happy Woman, Sara Avant Stover saw how women erroneously viewed these initiations as “curses” and sought to present a new model that reflected the power and wisdom unique to the feminine path.

The Book of SHE celebrates all that it means to be a woman, from mythological underpinnings to the cycles of our day-to-day lives. Drawing on archetypes including Mary Magdalene, the Dark Goddess, and Green Tara, Stover will guide you on a journey home to psychological wholeness, personal empowerment, and, ultimately, full feminine spiritual Awakening. Brimming with mystery and magic, this provocative book makes ancient wisdom and healing practices accessible to every woman who is ready to revel in her full femininity — the dark and the light — through joyfully becoming the heroine of her own life.

Let this beautiful book guide you home!
By Katy Taylor
"The Book of SHE" is a companion that you want to have with you every step of the journey of coming home to yourself! Sara provides not only a map for the path, but also gentle support as well as practice suggestions to guide you along. As always, Sara walks her talk—while she provides structures for our minds to grasp ahold of, she also balances this with plenty of body and heart practices. And she grounds the whole journey in the understanding that true integration and realization is a process of including both the Essential Feminine and the Essential Masculine—that both are absolutely necessary to find our way home.

I would recommend this book to any woman or man who wants support crafting their own path, and who feels the need to develop a healthier relationship with the Feminine within. Drawing on wisdom teachings from many faith traditions, the wisdom of "The Book of SHE" can be integrated into any particular religion. It will guide you to deepen your relationship with your Self, however you call that eternal, essential part of you.

I will return to this beautiful book over and over again as I walk my own path of coming home, and within its welcoming pages, I am sure I will find new gems of inspiration and support, both gentle and fiercely loving, to guide me along the way.

Great for rekindling your inner-wisdom's flame!
By Katie T. Larson
There comes a time in every woman's life that they are called to recognize that their path is more than just a series of rational choices, and that there may be something more divine at play. This book came at just the right moment into my life, and gave me validation for what I have been experiencing in my own heroine's journey. I am a fan of Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey and use it for nearly every metaphor I teach. Stover not only acknowledges Campbell, but adds a much-needed dimension of the heroine's journey by using a variety of anecdotes and research of how a woman experiences her path.

I would recommend this book to any woman who is questioning herself and has doubt about that little voice inside her. This will help you recognize your inner strength and the wisdom of your intuition, as well as introduce you to lot of other spiritual, mythic characters who may be there to help as well. Personally, I found the section on Dakinis really helpful as I was encountering one at a transition in my life and could not figure out why until reading this!

An important addition for any woman walking her Path.
By Amy McDonald
I've followed Sara's work literally for years. 'The Book of SHE' is her most authoritative, powerful and considered work to date. It's a potent yet loving call to action for all women to take self-love seriously, to heal, and to celebrate ourselves fully. Timely, very 'readable', warm and magically inspiring. An important addition for any woman walking her Path.

Buffettology: The Previously Unexplained Techniques That Have Made Warren Buffett the World's Most Famous Investor, by Mary Buffett, David

"Buffettology" is the first book from someone who, thanks to personal and professional access to Warren Buffett, has been uniquely positioned to learn from the master. Mary Buffett had the privilege-- during her twelve years as his daughter-in-law-- of sharing some of this very private genius's informal discussions of his investing philosophy, and now she shares some of her invaluable observations with us. This breakthrough book offers a full-blown explanation of how Buffett uses "Business Perspective Investing" as a wealth-building tool. His strategy is not so much to "pick stock" but to search for and invest in excellent companies whose intrinsic value and potential earnings he can reasonably predict through a series of steps we learn about throughout the book. Citing many fascinating case histories and examples, "Buffettology" shows us what kinds of companies Buffett looks for and why, and which he avoids and why. The authors show us the mathematical models and equations Buffett uses to determine the basic value and earnings potential of his final choices (and the right price to pay, for which he is willing to wait). We also learn how with the aid of an inexpensive, widely available handheld calculator, anyone can do similar equations. In addition to providing such in-depth analysis, this book offers two more firsts. One is a chapter on Buffett's rarely discussed and extremely successful arbitrage operations. The book gives us the arbitrage equation he uses to determine the positions he should take. The other is a comprehensive list and brief analysis of fifty-four companies in which Buffett has invested and the authors believe he continues to follow, many of which have never before been publicly identified as "Buffett companies".

Amazon.com Review
Americans are infatuated with the stock market. The number of households that own stock has increased from around 20 percent in the early 1980s to over 40 percent today. The market offers the hope of quick wealth and early retirement, and just about everyone who is in the market is looking for an edge, from sources such as CNBC and Wall Street Week to the Beardstown Ladies and "The Motley Fool." So it should be no surprise the most successful investor of our time--Warren Buffett--has been the subject of dozens of books and magazine articles. The value of Buffett's company, Berkshire Hathaway, has increased from $18 per share in 1965 to over $70,000 per share today. The interest in Buffett has spawned an approach to investing called "Buffettology," which is the subject of a book by the same name written by Buffett's former daughter-in-law, Mary Buffett.

In Buffettology, Mary Buffett, with the help of David Clark, details Warren Buffett's approach to investing. It's a style of investing based on the work of Benjamin Graham and one that requires a quality that most investors lack--discipline. Mary Buffett writes, "As you read through this book you will come to see that having a business perspective on investing is more about discipline than philosophy.... In short, other people's follies, brought on by fear and greed, will offer you, the investor, the opportunity to take advantage of their mistakes and benefit from the discipline of committing capital to investment only when it makes sense from a business perspective.... You will find that almost everything that relates to business perspective investing is alien to Wall Street folklore.

Buffettology examines Buffett's methods for valuing companies and selecting stocks--it even encourages you to buy a calculator and work through the valuation formulas that Buffett uses when researching companies to buy. The book not only serves as a useful guide to understanding how Buffett invests, it's an excellent primer to investing in stocks, whether you plan to become a Buffettologist or not. Highly recommended. --Harry C. Edwards, Business editor

Overall I would say this was an absolutely fantastic book. Do keep in mind one shortcoming with regards to the 10 year projections. The author assumes that all the retained earnings will increase the equity base on a dollar for dollar basis. However you have to keep in mind that some of those retained earnings will go towards investing in plant, property and equipment which merely replace old equipment with new equipment and do not increase the equity base. This net operating income minus capital expenditures for plant, property and equipment (found on the cash flow statement) are your owners earnings or free cash flow and, in my opinion, are a more realistic gauge to project equity per share figures.

Some good concepts, but they're better explained elsewhere
By The Man in the Hathaway Shirt
There's a sucker born every minute. --P.T. Barnum
This is very basic Buffett, almost comic book Buffett, and there's no shortage of books on him these days. The general concepts are well-known, but because you understand the basics of sonata form or theme and variations doesn't mean you can write symphonies like Beethoven, or even that you can write them at all. The biggest black mark of this book is Mary and Davey are such cheerleaders and make it sound so easy that any doofus who forks over the money will think they can do what only one person has ever done in all of history. And even BUFFETT admits he couldn't do it again in THIS market. Warren Buffett makes most of his money now through buying companies and arbitage these days.
Beware of something made too populist. If it were this easy, we'd all be billionaires. If it were this rarified, Mary wouldn't be sharing it with YOU, because no publisher could pay her more than she'd make just by keeping it to herself. Additionally, the book's tone is grating: it's all "Warren this" and "Warren that." Mary is obviously trying to leverage her privileged place (Or at least make us believe she had one), but the book reminds me of the insincere salesperson who uses your name too much in his pitch. ("John, you belong in this car. John, this car is you. I see you in this car, John.")
More alarming are numerous mathematical errors--the type you can check just by doing the arithmetic on your calculator. Someone should have proofed the book more carefully; it reads like it was rushed out the door. Considering that a PhD in finance was once briefly employed by Berkshire Hathaway as an assistant to Buffett, and after a week he quit, unable to keep up with The Master's hyperfast mind, one can imagine how dumbed-down the mathematical concepts in this book are.
The final section, where Mary urges you to set up investment partnerships similar to Buffett's, using money from your aunt, uncle, parents, and friends is downright irresponsible. (She warns you to keep the number of people in the trust below 100, so that you can avoid federal regulators!) That alone is enough to send the book to the garbage heap. What's interesting is Mary states frequently in this book that this is an investment technique for all times, that it's classic. Yet she has since come up with another book, "New Buffettology," in which she says the first book was written for a bull market and this new one is for the soft market. Oh really??? Anything for a buck, eh?
Some fine books on Buffett are The Warren Buffett Way, Buffett: The Making of an American Capitalist, and (best of all) Lessons for Corporate America. This book you can safely pass on.

Too simple
By A Customer
Buffetology tries to provide an, analysis behind the key to Buffets investing philosophy:
Investing in a business has two parts. 1) You need to understand if it is a great business (has a great business design) 2) You need to make sure that buy it at a price that will give you a good return. Both are necessary, although often only the first condition is present.
I would say that once you understand this, the rest of the book is spent providing an oversimplified `how to' guide for each part - still useful for many, but probably too simple for the people who were most likely interested in the first place.
Putting the above into practice, I think it is worth a read through, but I don't think the book is worth the $27.50 you'd have to pay to buy it -- maybe more like $9.99, or just skim through it in a bookstore.

An Introduction to International Economics: New Perspectives on the World Economy, by Kenneth A. Reinert

This book is designed for a one-semester or two-semester course in international economics, primarily targeting non-economics majors and programs in business, international relations, public policy, and development studies. It has been written to make international economics accessible to wide student and professional audiences. The book assumes a minimal background in microeconomics and mathematics and goes beyond the usual trade-finance dichotomy to give equal treatment to four "windows" on the world economy: international trade, international production, international finance, and international development. It takes a practitioner point of view rather than a standard academic view, introducing the student to the material they need to become effective analysts in international economic policy. The Story of the Human Body: Evolution, Health, and Disease, by Daniel Lieberman

In this landmark book of popular science, Daniel E. Lieberman gives us a lucid and engaging account of how the human body evolved over millions of years. He illuminates the major transformations that contributed to key adaptations to the body: the rise of bipedalism; the shift to a non-fruit-based diet; the advent of hunting and gathering; and how cultural changes like the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions have impacted us physically. He shows how the increasing disparity between the jumble of adaptations in our Stone Age bodies and advancements in the modern world is occasioning a paradox: greater longevity but increased chronic disease. And finally—provocatively—he advocates the use of evolutionary information to help nudge, push, and sometimes even compel us to create a more salubrious environment and pursue better lifestyles.

Starred Review. In thoroughly enjoyable and edifying prose, Lieberman, professor of human evolution at Harvard, leads a fascinating journey through human evolution. He comprehensively explains how evolutionary forces have shaped the human species as we know it, from the move to bipedalism, and the changes in body parts—from hands to feet and spine—that such a change entailed, to the creation of agrarian societies, and much more. He balances a historical perspective with a contemporary one—examining traits of our ancestors as carefully as he looks to the future—while asking how we might control the destiny of our species. He argues persuasively that cultural evolution is now the dominant force of evolutionary change acting on the human body, and focuses on what he calls mismatch diseases that are caused by lack of congruence between genes and environment. Since the pace of cultural evolution has outstripped that of biological evolution, mismatch diseases have increased to the point where most of us are likely to die of such causes. Lieberman's discussion of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and breast cancer are as clear as any yet published, and he offers a well-articulated case for why an evolutionary perspective can greatly enrich the practice of medicine. From Booklist
Like it or not, we are slightly fat, furless, bipedal primates who crave sugar, salt, fat, and starch. Harvard professor Lieberman holds nothing back in his plea that people listen to the story of human evolution consisting of five biological transformations (walking upright, eating a variety of different foods, accumulating physical traits aligned to hunting and gathering, gaining bigger brains with larger bodies, and developing unique capacities for cooperation and language) and two cultural ones (farming and reliance on machines). Unfortunately, human beings now create environments and presently practice lifestyles that are clearly out of sync with the bodies they’ve inherited. This mismatch results in myriad problems, including Type 2 diabetes, myopia, flat feet, and cavities. Lieberman cleverly and comprehensively points out the perils of possessing Paleolithic anatomy and physiology in a modern world and bemoans just how out of touch we have become with our bodies. Natural selection nudges all life-forms toward optimality rather than a state of perfection. If we want to continue our phenomenal run as a species, it is essential to understand (and embrace) our evolutionary legacy. --Tony Miksanek

Review
“Monumental . . . an epic voyage that reveals how the past six million years shaped every part of us—our heads, limbs, and even our metabolism. . . . Through Lieberman’s eyes, evolutionary history not only comes alive, it becomes the means to understand, and ultimately influence, our body’s future.”
—Neil Shubin, author of Your Inner Fish

“Fascinating. . . . A readable introduction to the whole field and great on the making of our physicality.”
—Nature

“Sweeping. . . . Convincingly makes the case for a wholesale rethinking of how we live our modern lives.’”
—CommonHealth, WBUR

“Riveting, enlightening, and more than a little frightening. . . . No one understands the human body like Daniel Lieberman or tells its story more eloquently.”
—Christopher McDougall, author of Born to Run

“These are not debates to gloss over or reduce to simple statements of cause and effect—they are stories with scientific complexity and tremendous, sometimes contradictory accumulations of evidence and detail. The Story of the Human Body does full justice to those stories, to that evidence and to that detail, and brings them to bear on daily health and well-being, individual and collective.”
—The Washington Post

“[Lieberman] is a true expert in a system where architecture and history intersect: the human foot. He ably describes how behavior and anatomy can lead to foot injuries in long-distance runners.”
—The Wall Street Journal

“The ultimate science-based Paleo investigation. . . . Convincing. . . . A great read, and I recommend it highly for those of you who are interested in learning the facts about our biological roots, and how we can rationally apply ‘Paleo’ concepts to prevent and reverse modern ‘mismatch’ diseases.”
—Dr. Ronald Hoffman, The Hoffman Center/Health Talk

“Eloquent and precise . . . Lieberman is the first to point out that modern living and technology have made our lives better in many ways. Still, a look back at where we came from can tell us a lot about where we’re headed, he says—and how we might alter that course for the better.”
—Grist

“A doozy. . . . That humans are poorly adapted to our modern lifestyle of convenience foods, flat screens, and desk jobs isn’t very controversial. But how we best cope with this new reality often is. Lieberman takes on many popular notions, including barefoot running, the paleo diet, epigenetics, and a host of hot topics ranging from obesity and chronic disease to Nanny State politics.”
—Outside

“[Lieberman’s] evolutionary approach produces some counterintuitive surprises. . . . The Story of the Human Body is a reliable guide to a problem that is going to get worse before it gets better.”
—The Guardian

“Lieberman holds nothing back. . . . He cleverly and comprehensively points out the perils of possessing Paleolithic anatomy and physiology in a modern world and bemoans ‘just how out of touch we have become with our bodies.’. . . Deep, detailed, wise, and very much worth while
By Dennis Littrell
The first part of the book is about human evolution from apes to Homo sapiens with a lot of interesting information about hominins (AKA hominids) and how we became bipedal and developed language and culture. The second part is about how the rise of agriculture and then the industrial revolution changed the health of our bodies for better and for worse. The third part is about how to cope with what Lieberman calls "mismatch diseases" and "dysevolution."

Lieberman's style is surprisingly readable considering that he has written scores of articles for peer-reviewed journals. There is some repetition (some of it on the same page!) but most of it is didactic because Lieberman is a teacher and he wants us to understand the great environmental and cultural changes that have taken place in the last 50,000 years or so since we became behaviorally modern humans. He is an expert on the human body, especially the head and the feet. Known as "the barefoot professor" at Harvard where he is the head of the Department of Human Evolutionary Biology, Lieberman is at the pinnacle of his profession and so what he writes about the human body and the environment is highly significant.

To give us as much information as possible, Lieberman begins in Part I with the Australopithecus apes and examines how they got around on two legs as they gradually evolved into the various archaic humans and finally into Homo sapiens. This early part of the book, about one-third of the total, gives the reader a good, contemporary understanding of the various early hominids such as Homo erectus, Homo neanderthalensis, Homo rudolfensis, etc. and how their bodies and habits differed from one another and from Homo sapiens. For example he notes how humans were better at throwing spears and rocks than apes and Neanderthals and how this ability (among other talents) helped humans to survive while the Neanderthal did not.

The beginning of Part II is about the discovery and growth of agriculture and animal husbandry and how that caused an explosion in human populations while bringing about new hardships and diseases. He calls this "The Fruits and Follies of Becoming Farmers." On page 181 he quotes Jared Diamond who claimed that farming was the "worse mistake in the history of the human race." Chapter 9 of Part II examines how the industrial revolution brought about new diseases, hardships, challenges and the beginning of hitherto undreamed of riches for humans and of course the real beginning of the massive pollution that is threatening the planet.

Part III is about chronic disease and other ailments of the modern world and how to cope in an environment radically different from the paleolithic one in which we evolved. It is here that Lieberman elucidates his concept of mismatch disease and dysevolution. The former refers to diseases of too much energy (over eating) and not enough physical activity that leads to obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, etc. that is epidemic in developed countries. The latter (dyevolution) is the phenomenon by which we address the symptoms of these chronic ailments instead of the causes thereby perpetuating the diseases.

An important point that Lieberman makes in the introduction and repeats elsewhere is that "many human adaptations did not necessarily evolve to promote physical or mental well-being." They evolved to "promote relative reproductive success (fitness)." (p. 13) On page 167 he expresses it this way: "we sometimes get sick because natural selection favors fertility over health, meaning we didn't necessarily evolve to be healthy." (!) This means that the tendency to get diseases like obesity and type 2 diabetes, and even Alzheimer's--diseases that do not reduce reproductive success until it becomes a moot point as we grow older--are mostly not selected against. The evolutionary mechanism that fashioned us simply turns a blind eye to diseases that mainly affect us after the prime reproductive years of our lives.

Another important point is that because humans evolved to be hunter-gatherers we are consequently optimally adapted to the way of life of a hunter-gatherer. This strongly suggests that (and is the main thrust of Lieberman's contention) we are NOT optimally adapted to either life in the big city or life on the farm. It may surprise some readers to learn that humans took a step backward in terms of easy living when we began to rely primarily on farming for subsistence. Lieberman refers to studies that show that not only did the instance of infectious disease increase as we became dependent on farming, but we actually got shorter in stature. We became more subject to a feast and famine way of life that led to more pain and suffering than hunter and gatherers experienced.

Lieberman dismisses several of the explanations for why we became bipedal, such as seeing over tall grasses, freeing our forelimbs for carrying things, etc. He believes that climate change from forested land to savannahs "spurred selection for bipedalism in order to improve early hominins' ability to acquire fallback foods...when fruit was not available." (See the section entitled "Why Be a Biped" in Chapter 2, "Understanding Apes.") "Fallback foods" are roots, tubers, animals like turtles, etc. The salient point is that being bipedal allowed the early apes to cover larger amounts of ground in search of food, whereas tree-dwelling apes could not because knuckle walking is not nearly as efficient as walking upright on two legs.

Among the wealth of insights that Lieberman makes about being human is this one about cooperation. "..[H]unter-gatherers are highly egalitarian and they place great stock in reciprocity.... In their "highly cooperative world...not sharing and being uncooperative can mean the difference between life and death. Group cooperation has probably been fundamental to the hunter-gatherer way of life for more than two million years." (pp. 75-76)

There's a lot of information about nutrition, physical activity and lifestyle choices beginning in Chapter 10 "The Vicious Circle of Too Much." On a point of much contention among nutritionists Lieberman concludes: "Insulin thus makes you fatter, regardless of whether the fat comes from eating carbohydrates or fat." (See the entire argument in the section "How and Why We Are Getting Fatter?")

As a means of fighting the mismatch diseases of obesity, type 2 diabetes, etc. Lieberman introduces in Chapter 13, "The Survival of the Fitter," the idea of "soft paternalism" by which he means governmental intervention to help discourage or tax unhealthy consumption of sodas and other highly processed junk foods. I'm not sure how I feel about this idea but I know many people would oppose it. What Lieberman does not present as a way to lessen human suffering is legal and assisted suicide.

One last quote: "If there is any one most useful lesson to learn from our species' rich and complex evolutionary history, it is that culture does not allow us to transcend our biology." (p. 366)

Solid Science and Strong Arguments
By Danno
'The Story of the Human Body' is a well-written book tailored for the curious nonscientist who wants to learn more about how our evolutionary history influences the sorts of ailments that we suffer from, particularly those that we often attribute to simple aging. This is a book primarily for the layman - if you've taken a good general life science course as a high school or college student you'll be able to survive the jargon just fine - and it's to author Daniel Lieberman's credit that he was able to write such an engaging, conversation book without overly simplifying the science behind his argument. The science itself is noncontroversial, and Lieberman does a great job distinguishing between the indisputable facts of the fossil record and what we can infer and assume based on our understanding of modern primitive peoples. Lieberman's central argument won't be new to anyone who's studied evolutionary theory and health sciences, but it's probably one that most people have not considered before.

I'm particularly impressed with the last chapter of the book. Most recent science books I've read that are written for a nonprofessional audience tend to either fall apart toward the end or have ridiculous wrapups that have little connection to the text that preceeded it. The last chapter of this book, on the other hand, reads like an extended essay examining the pragmatism of implementing our evolutionary knowledge to many of the potential solutions to improve our health. Truth be told, unless we're going to abandon civilization en masse and return to a hunter-gatherer lifestyle, any changes we make to get closer to the lifestyles that our bodies evolved for are going to necessarily be incomplete. But they will be for the better. And while I don't agree with all of Lieberman's arguments, it's difficult to contradict his primary conclusions.

This isn't an overly easy read, and it isn't going to lead to an overnight improvement in your health, but it's well worth the effort you put into reading this book. Set aside a week or so to read it slowly.

Our physiological & cultural evolution since Australopithecus
By William Garrison Jr.
"The Story of the Human Body: Evolution, Health, and Disease" by Daniel Lieberman (Oct. 2013), [approx. 370 pages of text, & another 60 pages of notes]. Okay, yes, this is a study of the evolution and development of us: mankind. The author doesn't start by hypothesizing how "man" evolved by some fish deciding to become a beachcomber and then standing upright. He avoids the "early" Darwin picture. Instead, the author fast-forwards his journey by picking up mankind's evolutionary traits "about six million years or so to a forest somewhere in Africa" (p.21).

But where is this journey going to take us? As the author postulates: "We didn't evolve to be healthy, but instead we were selected to have as many offspring as possible under diverse, challenging conditions. As a consequence, we never evolved to make rational choices about what to eat or how to exercise in conditions of abundance and comfort... If we wish to halt this vicious circle [of continuing to pass `bad' genes to our children] then we need to figure out how to respectfully and sensibly nudge, push, and sometimes oblige ourselves to eat foods that promote health...." (p. xii).

No, this is not some health-fanatic's book urging us to eating several wheel-barrels full of veggies every day. The author notes how we differ from our knuckle-dragging ancestors, such as we lost our earlier heavily powerful jaw muscles and bulky jaws as our forefathers began eating meats rather than subsisting totally on nuts, fruits, and tubers.

As the "Look Inside" feature was not available at the time of this review, following are the chapter contents, which really present a very good review of the innards of this book.

(Chpt. 1) Introduction: What are humans adapted for?

(Part I: Apes and Humans) [The author discusses the changes between: Australopiths, Homo habilis, H. rudolphensis, Homo erectus, H. heidelbergensis, H. floresiensis, H. neanderthalenis, and Modern humans.]

(2) Upstanding Apes: How we became bipeds.

(3 ) Much depends on dinner: How the Australopiths partly weaned us off fruit.

(4) The first hunter-gatherers: How nearly modern bodies evolved in the human genus.

(5) Energy in the Ice Age: How we evolved big brains along with large, fat, gradually growing bodies.

(6) A very cultured species: How modern humans colonized the world with a combination of brains plus brawn.

(Pat II: Farming and the Industrial Revolution.)
(7) Progress, mismatch, and dysevolution: The consequences-- good and bad --of having Paleolithic bodies in a post-Paleolithic world. [Cavities begin to appear in the time of the Neolithic farmer.]

(8) Paradise Lost?: The fruits and follies of becoming farmers. ["Humans have unleashed upon ourselves a frightening array of horrid diseases ... that we acquired by living in close contact with animals" (p. 201)]

(9) Modern Times, Modern Bodies: The paradox of human health in the Industrial Era.

(Part III: The Present, the Future)
(10) The Vicious Circle of Too Much: Why too much energy can make us sick.

(11) Disuse: Why we are losing it by not using it.

(12) The hidden dangers of novelty and comfort: Why everyday innovations can damage us.

(13) Survival of the Fitter: Can evolutionary logic help cultivate a better future for the human body?

This is not a book about human physiology: how blood flows throughout or body or how our kidneys work. But it does discuss how we picked up human parasites (lice, pin worms, etc.) and diseases (malaria, yaws, syphilis, etc.). This book isn't just about comparing the brain sizes of our early ancestors with ours; just a few factoids to make this topic interesting. This book is more about how human choices have impacted mankind's lifestyles, such as our increased consumption of sugar-loaded foods and how that impacts upon our insulin receptors, glucose molecules, glucose transporters and insulin-resistant stuff. And discussion about our increasing levels of "triglycerides from excess visceral fat." Yummy!

And the author reviews CT scans of Egyptian mummies to study the development of early LDL and HDL influences in some plaque-plugged veins of the Pharaohs.

The author concludes (in part): "If these is any one most useful lesson to learn from our species' rich and complex evolutionary history, it is that culture does not allow us to transcend our biology ... The human body's past was molded by the survival of the fitter, but your body's future depends on how you use it" (p. 367). This book is an easy, enjoyable read, and a wonderful, very informative look at our evolutionary development.
