In 1976 I made a documentary about the antiquities of Mesopotamia. When I was filming in the Louvre Museum and the British Museum, I discovered the truth about where all the legends of the Bible had come from. I discovered what I later was able to identify as the symbol of the Trinity. It took me many years to come to the realization that the original language of the Scriptures was not Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek; the language of the Scriptures was the first language ever recorded in history. It is called by the oldest Church in existence, "Leshana Atiqah," or the Ancient Tongue. The original language of the Bible evolved from drawings, symbols and finally the alphabet. It is, therefore, necessary to go back to the roots of all the words from the beginning of recorded history to understand the Scriptures accurately. This is not simple, but it helps that a translator should be a native speaker of the original language (in its modern vernacular.) Even though the ancient language of the Scriptures is based on thousands of years of development, it helps to be able to pronounce the language correctly. This is where my translation has produced the best version of the New Testament, and of the Old Testament, as I continue to translate the Old Testament Books. In the footnotes to my translation I provide the literal Aramaic idioms, expressions, figures of speech or grammatical constructions. The actual text of my translation is normally of the idiomatic translation. Whenever there is an idiom, I follow up with a footnote to provide the literal wording. However, sometimes the original idiom in the Old Tongue (Ancient Aramaic) is clear enough, and in such cases I note in the footnotes that the "idiom is retained." Then I give the idiomatic translation of the word or phrase in English. Another peculiarity of my translation is that it seems archaic to some people. This cannot be helped. It is not that I'm deficient in my English, but rather I have chosen to render the English language translation as close to the original text as possible (leaving out no words whatsoever) -- this being the first accurate translation of the Scriptures ever. I do not leave out anything of the original Text or smooth over anything; it is all there, word for word, both in the literal and the idiomatic wordings. My literal footnotes are, therefore, usually ungrammatical, but that is deliberate. The main body of my translated Text is idiomatic, but not idiomatic at the cost of altering the meaning. I opted to leave some of the Aramaic flavor intact and maintain the wording of those expressions and phrases that did not have an equivalent English language stylistic substitute. The manuscripts from which I translate are from the Ancient Church of the East, one of the first Churches that emerged out of Jerusalem during the Apostolic Age, in the First Century of Christianity. I'm a descendant of the families that followed in the footsteps of the Apostles of Eashoa Msheekhah (Jesus the Messiah.)

Good as a check and balance

This was the first Aramaic translation of the bible I was aware of. Since then, I have added:

George M Lamsa's translation of the Holy Bible,
Joseph Pashka's Aramaic Gospel and Acts
Janet Magiera's NT translation
Rev David Bauscher's Aramaic NT with Psalms and Proverbs, and so on, including
the works of Nicholas Klotz which I find is gnostic and not what ejusdem generis with mainstream Aramaic translations, notably Lamsa's various works and later updated posthumously.

Victor Alexander's translation has a little gnostic flavour to it. It is on the marginal fringe of Aramaic translations. Lamsa's work can be read like a later version of the KJV, but not this one. Since there is no standard Aramaic translation, I find Victor Alexander's work to be a good balance to the rest.

The price of this work is twice the price of Lamsa's translation and is thus expensive by contrast, and compounded by the absence of the Old Testament found in Lamsa's translation. Both bibles are however of similar size and this is because of the large number of footnotes in the Victor Alexander translation. But for a niche market product, it is very reasonably priced.

There is no publisher for this version, nor are there other contributors, it may represent Victor Alexander's own views. Biblical scholars are often capable of extraordinary feats, like Dake's KJV for instance.

The footnotes are quite redundant. The footnotes are unreadable cross references, useless unless you really want to dig deeper. My impression is that they are there to justify the translation. It sheds no light to the non-scholar, and compared to Janet Magiera's version (which reads best if you have OCD for layout) it is highly impersonal. Janet Magiera's two line footnotes gives more of a personal interpretation than the huge chunks of footnotes found in the V. Alexander translation.

The layout of the printed V. Alexander work leaves much to be desired. The margins are all over the place. It is made in the USA, Lexington, KY. It is dated 23 February 2011. At last, a bible printed in USA in recent times, which explains the high price and the slightly shoddy manufacturing standard.

I find Janet Magiera's work to be much clearer. Victor Alexander's tranches of footnotes may be useful, but the way Janet Magiera explains how she came to the translation with charts and different prints is more appealing to me.

However, the existence of an independent work in the area of Aramaic translations is important for a more balanced overall view. The closest to a "standard" KJV counterpart in Aramaic translations would be Lamsa. Victor Alexander's translation would not be a first choice for anyone venturing into Aramaic translations. Lamsa's is the best value by far, although Janet Magiera's is so well set out it blew me away (except for the part where Magiera's does not have the OT). Victor Alexander stays mainstream, and is nowhere as "gnostic" as Klotz (Klotz is a Sufi Muslim).

I wanted one with everybody's name as it traditionally occurs ...

I wanted one with everybody's name as it traditionally occurs in the KJV bible. They are not translated from Aramaic in this version. Also the name of each book does not occur at the top of each page which makes it hard to quickly find verses. Because of these things, you cannot haul this around as a substitute for other standard versions of the New Testament.
