Milestone has proven to be an excellent product for our customers

When I saw an email from Milestone telling me that their CEO had published a book, I quickly grabbed the Kindle version. As an employee of a busy security integrator, I work with Milestone frequently. Milestone has proven to be an excellent product for our customers, and the company has been incredibly successful. I've been very curious as to the story behind the company, and this book satisfied. Lars tells the story in a very conversational manner, weaving his own story effectively into the saga of Milestone. From the Scandinavian management model, to why Milestone is an open platform, to the acquisition by Canon, he covers it all. I highly recommend this book not only to people in the physical security industry, but to anyone involved in tech startups. It is a quick, fun read.

Always enjoyable to hear theory put into practice. Nice to hear from a Scandinavian view of the world. This is an easy read because it's concise, well - written, and nicely structured. They are innovating to disrupt an industry, and the insights on their path towards the IPO process and acquisition also offered interesting interesting insights. I felt tired just reading it... Their Open stance towards partnering will serve them well. This isn't the easiest path, but the one that will serve them best in the long run.

Kristofic, now a high-school teacher in Pennsylvania, shares his story of being transported at age seven from Pittsburgh to Ganado, Arizona, on the Navajo Indian Reservation by his mother, a nurse who had long nurtured her "Indian Dream." Jimmy is the only bilagaana, or white person, in his class, and he struggles with racial teasing from day one. By the third grade, he's learning to escape the daily taunting by helping his "Navajo enemies" with their schoolwork. Jimmy's new world is one of contrasts the violence and domestic abuse so common on the Rez occurring amidst its natural wonders, the prejudice he experiences before forming life-long friendships, the poverty-stricken homes in which food is always shared with a stranger. His mother marries a Navajo artist, and when Jim is a sophomore, the blended family moves to a small Utah town, where once again he feels like the "rootless transplant, the outsider," this time in a predominantly Anglo world. Entertaining memoir

I enjoyed this tender, well-written memoir very much. Mr. Kristofic's coming-of-age tale relates a world so many Anglos know too little about. Amazingly, the author manages to walk the line between being effusive in his appreciation for his adopted life and any potential criticism of the Navajo. Rather, he presents a clear-eyed portrait of a people and an environment he came to love. I was charmed by the episodes Kristofic chose to recount. From the opening pages, I liked the second-grade boy who is transplanted to the desert against his will. The boy, and the man he becomes, is keenly observant, self-effacing, and accepting. While there is nothing unique here (transferring into a new school, enduring the agonies of football as an undersized kid, figuring out who you are and wanting to be accepted at the same time), the author freshly presents these rites of passage. That they are set against a southwestern backdrop and peppered with fascinating historical facts about the Navajo only added to my enjoyment.

Mr. Kristofic's prose is crisp and sparse. Not a word is wasted. His ear for dialogue is spot on, whether it is capturing the verbal volley of a bully and his victim or teenagers out on a night of aggressive play or an exchange between Anglos and Navajo.

The author effectively represented the beauty of both the place in which he found himself, as well as its people. I was privileged to inhabit his world for the days I spent reading Navajos Wear Nikes. Even after having read so much of his life, I longed to know more, to know this person better. I also wanted to know more about the Navajo. This is an interesting and touching memoir.

Nicely crafted memoir

Having briefly lived on a Navajo reservation as a twenty-something I would like to comment on this book's resonance with a fellow biligaana. Since, however, few people have likely shared the experiences Mr. Kristofic writes about, I'm sure my comments about its authenticity will be of little use to many readers, so I will keep these comments brief. I would simply like to say that this book poignantly captures the naivete of a modern man brought up on a steady diet of cartoons and John Ford. Though it's a familiar (but never cliche)coming-of-age story line, NWN takes us through the pains of wanting to belong matched only by a striving to be unique. The chapter when young Jimmy finally goes to college and is surrounded by his own WASP heritage is a situation that should resonate with anyone who has wrestled with reconciling the truths and platitudes of their heritage.

Regardless of your own experience with N. Americans or life on the Rez, I would recommend this book because of its great pacing, subtle comedy and a light-handed treatment of learning how to grow up. I read this book quite quickly, due in large part because I didn't put it down. It was a different sort of page-turner in that I wasn't on edge, or worried for the characters. Instead, it was more like getting caught up in a grandfather's story where there is a great balance of details and story. By "subtle comedy," I mean that I wasn't laughing out loud but there was a tender treatment of childhood friendship and world view that causes one to appreciate such simplicity as well as laugh at the brashness of youth. I don't know if the author would think this is a compliment but his ability to authentically write children, their dialogue and their thought process, reminds me of King in Different Seasons and IT.

My reason for four stars is that I felt the last few chapters were exploring similar themes and I wasn't as "into" them. I can't put my finger on it but I just wasn't as engaged with the vignettes or the smattering of interesting facts. Although, as I said already, one of those last chapters was my favorite.

Navajos Wear Nikes

This book brought to life everything that I love about living on the rez. He truly captured the spirit of the Navajo people and our land. He brought to light many of the issues that face our people in a very funny, astute and emotional story. I believe he answered The Question in the only way possible, with stories, just like a Navajo should. I am definitely recommending this book to people who have asked me The Question.

Beautiful and Creepy

I preordered this coloring book at the beginning of September and just received my copy yesterday. I absolutely love it! The pictures are creepy and very pretty (pretty for the type of content at least). A lot of the pictures are very detailed, but as long as you have either use pens or keep your colored pencils nice and sharp, it shouldn't be a problem. The quality of the paper is very nice and thick and easy to draw/color on. I highly recommend this coloring book to anyone looking for a creepy coloring book for Halloween or if you're just into that kind of thing.

The Beauty of Horror, the best coloring book for Halloween and true horror fans.

I LOVE this book!!! I have over 75 coloring books and I can honestly say that this is my favorite coloring book, it makes it very hard to do my day to day activities because I just want to color in this book. The pictures have such amazing details and thought put into them. I was not disappointed in a single picture, most of my coloring books have several pictures that I will never color but there isn't a single picture in this book that I don't want to color!!! I highly recommend this book, especially for horror fans. A lot of Halloween coloring books are more pumpkins, black cats etc and they lack the detail this book has. This book has the detail, the gore and the kind of pictures a real horror fan can sink their teeth into. Buy this book!!!!

Fun games but misprinted descriptive text.

The text has so many mistakes - lots of boxes where letters should be in the rules and descriptions of the puzzles. I'm going to have to look up rules on the internet for the Skyscraper puzzles because of this. I think the puzzles themselves are okay. These are fun games nonetheless. I especially like the Greater Than/Less Than puzzles.

Emphasis on Statistics. Good for Beginner to Intermediate.

Sharp Sports Betting is a complete lesson in betting on the NFL. For the beginner, there is instruction on what kind of bets are available and how to place them. And there is detailed instruction on how to handicap sporting events and determine what bets are worth taking using complex statistical analyses. I say that it is a complete lesson in betting the NFL because most examples that the author gives are from the NFL. Much of the book's content can be applied equally to other sports, and the author frequently tells you exactly how to do that. But I would say that it is not a complete lesson in betting on other sports, due to its emphasis on the NFL.
For those unfamiliar with the workings of sports books, Sharp Sports Betting explains how to place bets, money management, calculating what you stand to win on bets, and what types of bets are available, including separate chapters on money lines, over/under bets, props, parlays, and teasers. There is a glossary of sports book terms in the back of the book. And there is a chapter on internet sports books.
Moving beyond the basics, the author lays out his highly mathematical methods of handicapping sporting events and choosing bets. I have to say that I was not at all surprised to find out, on the last pages of this book, that Stanford Wong is also a professional blackjack player. He earned his way through graduate school playing cards. He has written books on blackjack. And he handicaps sports precisely like a blackjack player. I think the cardshark perspective that Wong brings to handicapping sports lends a little extra interest and unique content to Sharp Sports Betting. Not to put too fine a point on it, but the guy is a statistics and probability nut. He doesn't actually make his own lines, so there is no instruction on line-making. He just tells you how to beat the lines that the sports books are offering, using probabilities. At least half of this 384-page book is dedicated to teaching the reader how to calculate probabilities of various things happening in a game -pretty much anything that could happen in a game, actually. I wouldn't know how to begin to explain it, so I won't. In addition to instruction, the author includes a lot of charts which aid you in predicting outcomes, many specifically for the NFL, but some relevant to other sports. There are also 2 appendices with charts of Poisson distribution of events (probabilities), one cumulative and one not. A third appendix contains charts for win-lose-push probabilities.
Sharp Sports Betting is a good introduction to sports betting for the novice. Its very mathematical tone and in-depth instruction on calculating probability make it useful for the intermediate bettor, as well. The author's passion for applying statistics to sports, in the spirit of a card player, may result in some fresh ideas for the experienced handicapper also.

Good info, but out of date

"Sharp sports betting" is a book about sports gambling with an emphasis on the NFL. The book takes a very methodical approach to beating the number posted by the bookmaker. The book outlines a number of interesting techniques for beating various spread, moneyline and proposition wagers.
The author expects the reader to blindly accept many of his techniques. Large sections of the book assume that sports data fits neatly into a particular probability distribution, such as Poisson or binomial. The author does not justify his reasoning and expects the reader to go on faith alone. This left me slightly uneasy because if the underlying assumption is incorrect, all the calculations are rendered useless.
Perhaps the biggest drawback of the book is its age. Many of the techniques have already been incorporated into the betting line. No bookmaker will allow the player to have an advantage by buying off the "3" in the NFL. The book is still useful for evaluating certain wagers such as middles but unfortunately its value has greatly diminished with time.
A good book to buy for easy access to NFL reference charts.

The bible of sports gambling

Stanford Wong wrote the single best volume for the beginner to intermediate sports bettor (with an emphasis on football). The book teaches the basics of sportsbetting, terminology, understanding odds, and methods to make bets that should win in the long-term. This is an excellent primer on someone who is serious about making money from sports.

The material is slightly dated - internet betting has made the sports markets more efficient. Notwithstanding this, most of the material is still useful (notable exceptions are trends of super bowl teams, and some underdog analysis).

There is a recurring emphasis on mathematics, which any solid gambling book should have. Additionally, the book has several charts that are invaluable to sports bettors. It has frequences of pushes for NFL against different spreads, as well as different totals (these have not changed significantly since the book was published). Additionally, it has odds charts for Poisson distributions for 1 and 2 variables. While an advanced gambler could generate all these charts themselves, this book still saves the newer gamblers many hours - and the book is worth it for these alone.

If you are serious about gambling to win (which means you are willing to put in long hours, and are very disciplined), there are a few other books you might consider: any of Stanford Wong's Blackjack Books; Larry Seidel's "Investing in College Basketball" and Don Pesynski's "Win more-- lose less!".

"Programming interviews exposed" vs "Cracking the coding interview"

"Programming Interviews Exposed: Secrets to Landing Your Next Job"
(2nd edn), John Mongan, Noah Suojanen and Eric Gigu�re (2nd edn, 2007)
is a good book, but so is the very similar "Cracking the coding
interview" (4th ed, 2008) by Gayle Laakman. Which should you choose?
Here are the main differences:

- "Exposed" is much more readable: it explains the solutions in
English before giving code, whereas "Cracking" often just presents
code with minimal explanation. Another nice thing is that "Exposed"
presents the solution in stages, so you can read the first part of the
solution to get a hint, and then try again. By contrast, "Cracking"
just gives the key idea right away, so even a "peek" at the solutions
means it's game over (modulo coding issues, which are usually easy).

- "Cracking" has more questions, and they generally seem to be a bit
harder. They are sorted in order of increasing difficulty, which is
helpful.

- "Cracking" gives solutions in Java, although the code seems to have
some errors (see other reviews on amazon). "Exposed" gives solutions
in a mix of languages (C++, Java, C#), although they only use one
language per question.

- "Cracking" contains some grammatical errors (for example, Gayle
often mixes up "eg" and "ie"). In addition, many explanations would be much clearer with
an example.

- Both books are similar in length (about 300 pages), and their "non
technical" advice is very similar.

- Overall, "Exposed" is easier to read, but "Cracking" has more
content. Tough call.

There is also the good book "Algorithms For Interviews" by Adnan Aziz
and Amit Prakash (2010), which contains much harder questions,
focusing on clever algorithms and not on implementation details. Do
not attempt this book before mastering "Cracking" and/or "Exposed",
you will find it demoralizing! But it's probably worth trying some of
these harder problems, to see how "fancier" algorithms (like Dijkstra,
or max-flow min-cut, or dynamic programming) can be applied in
creative ways.

Great book for experienced professionals back in the job market

I have over 20 years of software development experience and have been at my current company for over 10 years. And that job was through a friend. So I hadn't interviewed or written a resume in quite some time. I found out pretty quickly that things had changed since my last job search.

Given today's competitive market, I find that more employers are looking not only at experience (as they did in my prior job searches), but also are testing applicants on college level computer science. It's true that professionals have taken these courses, but it's been a very long time since I had to write a binary tree algorithm. Once you have experience, you still need to understand data structures and algorithms, but I'd seriously worry about a programmer that wrote their own btree functions. Part of software engineering is understanding what you need, where to find the libraries and tools to support your selection, and understanding how to apply them. So I was taken by surprise when asked about btree algorithms and red/black tree traversal. I remembered these concepts, but wasn't prepared to sit down and code one.

This is where this book came in handy. It sets the stage for interviewing in today's marketplace, covers all those CS101 concepts that some of us are rusty at, and provided good examples to practice working through those low level concepts.

I found it very helpful for my second round of interviews at a very technical company.

For those people that say there is no silver bullet, or that you can't learn to be a computer scientist from one book, I totally agree. But that is not the intended audience. This book is great for those of us that have all that knowledge, but are a bit rusty on some of the data structure internals. It's also great for experienced professionals who have been out of the market for a while.

Not a silver bullet

The bulk (90%) of this book focuses on basic C.S. algorithms. A few pages at the end are dedicated to the "soft questions", or non-technical stuff.

Really, this book is a direct result of the "Interview 2.0" concept that came out in the late 90s and still persists. I feel that a lot of tech companies (except perhaps a select few, such as Google and MS) have realized that interviews based exclusively on basic C.S. algorithm knowledge isn't the way to pick the best candidate.

There is a *ton* of material in this book. If you focus on it, you may end up shooting yourself in the foot. So make sure your target company is going to be focused on algorithm questions before you put the time into doing the problems here. Or avoid those companies. Honestly, you're wasting your life relearning this stuff, as interesting as it is, unless you're going to be designing algorithmic libraries.

Also, don't forget the soft questions (your past experience is really important!).

Update, 2009-02-23:
Looking back at this review, I may have been a bit too harsh. This is an excellent book in a lot of ways. It is a great review of some of the more famous algorithm problems in computer science (although I'd recommend picking up Bentley's Programming Pearls if you want a real glance into famous algorithmic problems). It also has some general good advice on soft questions, although I wish it had spent more time on this area - as I learned the hard way in one of my first interviews looking for a new job. And hence why I rated this 3 stars at the time.

Regardless, I still flip through it every time before an interview... So if I could, I would revise my rating up to 4 stars.

So You Want To Be A Stylist.....then READ this book!

As a fashion professional I'm usually not impressed by style books especially those that promise to give "insider" tips! However, Sasha has cracked the code, sharing real information that is imperative for any one that wants to be in the business of styling or for the gal or guy that wants to look styled! I love that the information she dispenses isn't just from her experience, she calls on her friends that just happen to be the TOP STYLISTS in the game and we get their trade secrets as well! Every fashionista has a library of must have fashion books, now we have a new one to add on the list!

A Very Insider Guide

Read this book if you want to be a stylist when you grow up. This is not a great guide for real, grown-up women looking for every day style advice.
A lot of the information reads like warmed over articles from every fashion and beauty magazine you've read in the last 10 years. And since Ms. Charnin has written for Allure and others this makes sense. I for one am tired of style guidance having to be tied to celebrity and there is a lot of that here. I was looking for something smarter.
I got a lot more out of Style Evolution by Kendall Farr and How Not To Look Old by Charla Krupp.

Only buy if you want to become a stylist

This book is good if you want to become a stylist, but it't not really interesting to your average fashionista. Perhaps I misunderstood what the book is about, but I thought it would be more of a generic "how to" in styling yourself, from professional stylists to the stars. Instead, it's very "industry-based", so I got a little bored.

William Navidi is Professor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences at the Colorado School of Mines. He received the B.A. degree in mathematics from New College, the M.A. in mathematics from Michigan State University, and the Ph.D. in statistics from the University of California at Berkeley. Professor Navidi has authored more than 50 research papers both in statistical theory and in a wide variety of applications including computer networks, epidemiology, molecular biology, chemical engineering, and geophysics.

Degrees: Bachelor of science in applied mathematics, University of Alabama; master of arts in mathematics, University of Alabama; and doctorate in applied mathematics, University of Alabama.

Year he joined the Macon State faculty: 2001.

About the Author
Shashank Nigam is a globally sought-after consultant, speaker and thought leader on airline branding and customer engagement strategy. The Brand X-factor guide you'll want to keep on your desk, even if you don't work at an airline.

SOAR is a uniquely handy book for brand management. While it's focused on the airline industry—and includes rich case studies of how various airlines have managed their brand image and customer engagement—I have to disagree with the writer when he suggests the successful methodologies detailed in the book are exclusively applicable to the airline industry.

Certainly, the book considers the unique complexities of managing customer demands of millions in time-sensitive circumstances and under the unique pressures airlines endure day-to-day. In that sense, it is a carefully considered practical guide for airline managers at all levels. But the guidance is so clear and handy that it could be applied by any brand in any industry, with very few adjustments.

Put it this way: if airlines can manage their brands using these techniques then it will be easier for others outside of aviation, who may be under less pressure day-to-day, to apply them.

Whatever your function or service sector, SOAR is the type of book you'll want to read and then keep as a daily reference. It inspires the reader to apply the learnings from the airline case studies and the 6X model Brand measures (eXpectation, eXperience, eXpression, eXternalities, eXecution, and X-Factor) right away, and makes the goal of improving brand presence seem very achievable. SOAR is an essential management tool which can help any brand rise above the crowd.

A unique look inside how some of the world's best airlines think

Anyone who knows anything about the development of airline marketing in the last five years would have certainly heard of Shashank Nigam, the founder of SimpliFlying, a company that has worked with some of the best airlines in the world. Arguably, Shashank ushered in a new way of thinking about marketing at airlines before "social" and "digital" were cool catch-words. Now, he dives deep into eight of the most fascinating airlines in the world -- Southwest, Finnair, Air New Zealand, AirAsia, Kulula and more -- and unearths what makes them special as brands. For Southwest, for example, it's the company culture that's so deeply ingrained that it's second nature; for Finnair, it's about expressing the brand through distinctive design; and so on. At each airline, Shashank speaks personally to the movers and shakers, and gains an understanding what makes it click. In the process, he also uncovers fascinating nuggets of information. You might have read books where one airline is explored at great depth, but this is the first book that attempts to put eight wonderful airlines under one roof, and demonstrates linkages and contrasts, trends and contradictions, best-practices and pitfalls. All this is not to say that someone reading this book will be able to create a wonderful airline brand out of the box -- but it goes a long way towards ensuring that you're well equipped to understand what might get you there!

A great read from cover to cover...

This book is a great insight into the modern day airline industry and has a lot of good lessons for marketers. Author Shashank Nigam leads the reader into the unique stories of some of the world's largest and most recognized airlines, whilst outlining his 6X model. A thoroughly enjoyable read from the start to finish and full of real life examples of best practice within the airline industry. Whether you are interested in marketing and enjoy learning about brand strategy or want to learn more about the airline industry, this book carries a good take home message which can be applied in business. My favorite chapter is the AirAsia one as it outlines the brands unorthodox approach to business and I think other airlines can learn a lot from not being so rigid. I particularly love the authors quote; "Airlines almost always over-promise and under-deliver". As passengers we always have an expectation which airlines fail to live up to.
