Fantastic Book

So, I'll start with the ordering/shipping process.

Amazon ships this from the same seller as the Starting Strength books, and I received it in about half the time they said it would arrive . I was very happy with the book, it showed up in near-perfect condition.

As for the book itself, while it's dated in terms of years, all of the information in it is still applicable today. Most of Starr's 5x5 programs have different names nowadays, but are just as effective as they were when he published this book.

While the first portion (1/3 or so) is devoted to actually teaching the lifts and programs, the book extends into all aspects of training a football team. From maintaining motivation to lift with heavy days and competition, to how to approach different position athletes in terms of goals, Starr shows his years of experience in dealing with the sport. The final part of the book deals with nutrition, supplementation, and rest, which are usually glossed over when it comes to the sport's training method. He goes into great detail to show just how very important nutrition and rest can be when it comes to training elite athletes. I also find it refreshingly forward of him to cover athletes and drug use, including steroids, alcohol, and marijuana. Instead of just demonizing them, he approaches the problem from a coaching perspective, and in doing so, advocates a position of moderation on the latter two. Starr knows that athletes are going to drink, and probably smoke, because of the social aspects of the drugs, and so advocates for education on the drugs, and in not using them a few days before game time, or letting it impede with training.

If you're interested in training, and it's your first time, go ahead and skip this and get Starting Strength by Rippetoe. It draws heavily from Starr's manual, and updates the information for the relevant audiences. If you're interested in learning the history of the sport, or just reading it straight from the horse's mouth, I'd recommend Starr's book to any interested party. It's a purchase you won't ever regret.

Valuable information

This book was first published in 1976. There is some information which is non-beneficial/harmful (i.e. placing a board under heels during squats, performing leg extensions and upright rows). However, there is some exeptionally valuable information in this book. If you follow the program outlined you will undoubtedly make strength and muscular gains regardless of your level of training. There is also an outstanding nutrition and injury rehab section. Purchase this book along with Dr. Colgan's The New Power Program and Stuart McRobert's Insider's Tell All on Weight Training Technique and you will be set. I have purchased many other weight training books and have found these three texts to be the best.

An overlooked sleeper of a book

We all jump on the science bandwagon and believe that there is some sort of great secret to be learned in order to gain size, strength and speed. There is no great secret! Follow the three, yes three simple exercises in this book and you will make all the gains you could ever ask for.

Grade 6-10. Marsden picks up right where Tomorrow, When the War Began (Houghton, 1995) left off. A few months have passed since Ellie and six of her friends returned from a camping trip deep in the Australian outback to find their country invaded by an unidentified, non-English-speaking nation. The Dead of Night opens with a brief recounting of what happened in the previous novel; two members of the group, Corrie and Kevin, are still missing. Homer, a self-appointed leader, rallies the others together to track them down. They discover that Kevin has been imprisoned, and Corrie is alive, but in a coma. The teens continue their guerrilla activities and, by the end of the story, have lost Chris, another comrade. As in Tomorrow, Ellie narrates and keeps a written record of the group's activities and experiences. She is a fully realized character who grows considerably in the story. She is a thoughtful, realistic protagonist who wrestles not only with the brutalities of war, but also with her own adolescence. Her feelings for Lee are particularly well done. She wants to have sex with him, but worries about the complications that could result. These realistically depicted human conflicts make the book much more than just an exciting apocalyptic adventure. In the end, only four members of the original seven remain, but they are still committed to fighting the enemy. Hope is alive. good plot and action continues, WARNING to preteen parents

I am feeling rather prudish writing these reviews, but I do feel it is appropriate to make sure parents know what is in their children's books. My 13 year old daughter and I both read and enjoyed the first book in the series. I have now just finished reading the second and know she will enjoy it, but will find the sexual content a bit uncomfortable. I will let her read it, but plan on discussing it with her. I would definitely not put this book in the hands of anyone younger. The violence may also be disturbing. I would highly recommend another book out of Australia that we both enjoyed: "Looking for Alibrandi" by Melina Marchetta. Check this one out, good romance, good plot, good decisions. Enjoy.

Greatest war story/coming of age tail ever told

I was first introduced to this serioes at school, we were assigned to read it for English, before this book all books assigned to us in school were all garbage and I expected the same, as did most the other students in my class, most wouldnt bother to read it, so the teacher read it aloud in class, for most of it upuntil the half way mark I ignored most of it, until it dawned on me that this book was actualy sounding o.k. When I got home i got my copy from the bookshelf and actualy started to read it, and I read at any chance I had, and when I finished I read the second and third and then had to wait while the rest were written and released
The amazing story starts off with a group of teenagers going camping, and when they return the find the Australia has been taken over by another country, they go to the bush again to hide, but can't just sit back and do nothing and decide to fight back in what ever way they can, although unconventional, when all is said and done and the series is over they made a huge impact on the war, sometimes planned, sometimes fluked, of coarse not all survive and with every loss you can not help but feel the emotional pain of the others, it is the best comming of age story I have read, and although it is listed as a young adult series, it will be unforgetable to all ages and you will develop a bond with Ellie, Homer, Kevin and the rest of the gang, I have never fell in love with any fictional charactors the way I did with these guys, not even in T.V series
A story like this comes along once in a life time, do not, and I mean do not missss this book

Shame on Rosemary and Edward for what they did to Alex. How do you treat a child like that? I Do not care who the child belongs to you do not treat them that way. They damaged that poor boy. Thank goodness for Cathy ,Gwen and her husband as they did save him. You did a great job Cathy as did Alex adoptive family who now Love him forever. I relize he is an adult now and hope he himself gets to read these reviews. Keep being happy Alex.

Cathy I think your a great foster parent. Councelor, many things to children.I think it was You who helped Alex first, foster parents were very good but he came no to u and think he will never forget you.I fostered one child 6 yrs and she was adopted.I got too attached so never took more, I have 2 of mine girls , 1 stepson.GOD bless you wish there were more like u.Looking forward to next book.

Excellent review of the literature

I am torn between really liking and loving this book and would have much preferred to be able to state that it is excellent. However, it is not always an easy book to read, especially for the non-linguist as much of the argument is couched in linguistics but it is still the best book that I have read describing/identifying the Polynesians as they began to spread across the Pacific and it certainly forced me to clarify my own ideas on this topic. Having said that it probably while it may be among the last books one reads directly on this topic it probably should not be the first and it does leave some fascinating questions unanswered such as why they dropped the pottery traditions of the Lapita.
