A GREAT TEXT OF HARD TO FIND INFO

If you read the description you can easily see that this isn't a kids book! I'm a herpetologist and I find this tome both extremely informative and easy to use. There are descriptions of venom chemistry, delivery system, animal habits, the records of how many people were injured and why, and effects on the envenomed in a concise one-book-covers-all way. This isn't for the kiddies nor is it for the average level of interest. The layman may need help with terms and physiological processes.

The reason that I am doing this is because I don't have the access to e-mail.
This is the best book on venom that I have ever read! I have studied this materiel all of my life. I am going to become a zoologist. This book opened up a new world of venomous/poisonous animals. The one thing that it didn't mention; however, was the difference between passivelly venomous and activally venomous. You can kind of say that it is MY theroy. I can't give out my name; but, I will explain it to you. Activally venomous animals like scorpions, snakes, cone shells, etc, use their venom to capture and subdo their prey. Passivally venomous animals like, the platypus, stone fish, etc, use their venom for self defense. The book was great, and I would like to publish one myself. I would love to meet with the author of the book because I could talk about animals for days at a time.

An important textbook for the study of toxicology.
I wish the pictures were colored.... It would add to the experience....
But nevertheless, I highly recommend this book, for gaining in depth knowledge off the subject.
This is a book for the professional, including an impressive list of reference.

A straightforward introduction to the craft and art of keeping and managing beehives for honey

University of Florida Extension Beekeeping Specialist Malcolm T. Sanford has combined his expertise with the late Richard E. Bonney's foundational "Beekeeping and Hive Management" instructional to create Storey's Guide to Keeping Honey Bees, a straightforward introduction to the craft and art of keeping and managing beehives for honey. Although intended especially to help neophytes get up to speed, Storey's Guide to Keeping Honey Bees is solid and thorough enough to offer plenty of tips, tricks, and techniques that long-time veterans will appreciate. Chapters address the necessary preparatory steps (from researching local community laws about bees to acquiring and learning how to use protective equipment to keeping emergency remedies for bee stings on hand and more), how to install a colony (two colonies are recommended for beginners, in case one colony suffers disaster), prevent diseases, harvest honey crops, and much more. "In rural areas, ensure that livestock are not located nearby (some tend to use beehives as scratching posts). Horses are a particular problem. Their odor seems to offend bees, and when stinging starts, horses often react violently and can injure themselves."

A dull and lacking narrative

This was a very poor representation of what beekeeping is actually like and in many cases he gives the worst possible solutions on how to fix common problems in the hives. An example of how useless this book is, is the question "how much honey should i leave on a hive during winter?" the author's response was "what do you think they need?" Many other problems are approached by either reasking the question or are just a new question in and of themselves. I would not even recommend this book to a novice as even simple tasks are not fully explained. Also the random quotes and filler are not only distracting but boring and uninformative. This book needs some serious revision or to be pulled off the shelves.

As a follow up to a comment left I recommend "the beekeeper a handbook" by Diana Sammataro and Alphonse Avitabile, it's great for beginners but also has good information for mid level beekeepers too.

Good overall, but lacking in a couple areas

First, don't expect to find a single book out there that will walk you through every single bee keeping process step by step. That said, this is certainly a valuable addition to your library of books on the topic.

One thing I did like is that the author recognizes that there are many different approaches to every aspect of keeping bees, and he does not say that one is right and the rest are wrong. He does make recommendations for the best approaches for beginners to use, but also recognizes that more experienced keepers may want to experiment.

This book does have lots of good pointers, especially for the beginner. Read it cover to cover, and you'll get a lot of good information.

Cons- when comparing keeping bees in the "north" vs the "south," the author is comparing bee keeping in USDA hardiness zone 6 to zone 7. I keep bees in zone 3, so by comparison, zone 6 is pretty mild. Information on keeping bees in places that are actually cold, like zone 3, and actually hot, like zone 8 or 9, should have been included.

Golden and Runny - A Masterful Creation

I neither had the patience to wait for this book to be available on Kindle nor for the print edition to be available here in the US. So I did what every good book reader does - Ordered the print edition in India as soon as it was released (where it was originally published by Harper Collins) & had it shipped to me. Read it in one sitting.
Confession: I haven't read the kindle edition yet (just ordered) but I guess I don't necessarily have to read the kindle edition to review the book.

First things First: You don't need to know the author to enjoy the book. This is a great read for anyone who is simply looking for a book packed with lighthearted notes on how to stay positive no matter what. A pocket guide, if you will, for those who want to read something quick, whenever they feel down or whenever things look a little bleak.

I bet you will smile your way through this book. And no, it is not because this is a "humorous" book - but because this is a book that is bound to remind you of situations in your own lives. There were at least half a dozen situations that I could completely relate to as narrated by Anu. I smiled my way through because I simply loved how the author so gleamingly narrates her way of handling some difficult situations and how very cogently she connects these situations with some generic notes that can make a desk calendar on their own if compiled together.

Final Note: My Father In Law (75), who hadn't read a single book in the past two decades, decided to take a sneak peek at this book and ended up reading this book in its entirety. Now, he cannot stop raving about this book enough, for he loved Anu's simple style of presenting her unfazed attitude while handling some real life issues and the simple portrayal of all things positive.

Highly recommend this book.

Easy, breezy one-shot-read kind of book. The language is beautiful, simple, precise, articulate and so free flowing that I could imagine Anu talking about the same with laughs and giggles that I observed in her shows and interviews. The wit and humor shined through and the incidents and experiences she had chosen to mention in the book are very much one could relate to. I was impressed with the authenticity, sensitivity and objectivity with which author has presented the vulnerabilities and they way they are put in perspective towards the end of each topic.

Simple, honest, direct easy to follow and couldn't stop reading. Anu has shared her pearls of wisdom, knowledge, happiness and some tears. Totally engrossed until the end. Two thumbs up!!

About the Author

Ed McGaa, J.D., was born on the Oglala Sioux reservation in South Dakota and is a registered tribal member. He served in Korea as a Marine Corporal before earning an undergraduate degree at St. John's University in Minnesota. He then rejoined the Marine Corps to become a Phantom F4 fighter pilot in Vietnam, where he flew in more than a hundred combat missions. Upon his return McGaa danced in six annual Sioux Sun Dances. The Sun Dance led him to the seven Mother Earth ceremonies under the tutelage of Chief Eagle Feather and Chief Fools Crow, two Sioux holy men. Eagle Man holds a law degree from the University of South Dakota and is the author of Red Cloud: Biography of an Indian Chief; Mother Earth Spirituality: Healing Ourselves and Our World; Rainbow Tribe: Ordinary People Journeying on the Red Road; Native Wisdom: Perceptions of the Natural Way; and the novel Eagle Vision: Return of the Hoop.

Stories of people taking the natural way

This book is a collection of stories of people taking the natural way instead of the closed minded dogma of most religion.
In this book Mr. McGaa releases more of his distaste for "christianity" I suffered too much at the hands of "christians" as well.
If you are interested in taking the natural way; this book offers some guideposts to follow.
If your mind and heart are closed; as demonstrated by the reviewer from San Francisco below; go back to you dogmatic religion where you are forced to give your power away to the people in power. I wish you peace.
Minds and hearts are like parachutes. They only work when they are open.

ABOUT REAL AMERICANS ... 57 WONDERFUL VARIETIES

WALKING THE "RED ROAD" OF SPIRITUALITY IS NOT ABOUT BEING AN
INDIAN "WANNABEE". Ed McGaw does a great job showing the reality
of people, I know some personally, who have taken their steps
toward what is "real" in their lives.

Knowing and hearing Ed personally reminds me how he is the first to say "don't follow
me or turn me into some sort of guru". The Natural Way is about
us and the creator and creation. About every day, his words from
this book and "Mother Earth Spirituality" resound in my head.

This book is about us ordinary stiffs who ducked the clutter
that American society clamors at us, and pray to the four directions
daily, or stop to chat with a winged one who blesses are day.

What did Jesus say?
"Unless one becomes as a child .......". Wise is Wise.

exploitation???

Ed McGaa, writing about what he is called to write about, has the blessed good fortune to be published. The ceremonies he writes about have meaning to him and he wishes to share their essence with the readers. There is nothing about exploitation in this. What this book does is send a message of hope that people will do SOMETHING in themselves to correct their insane ways and reconnect with the living Spirit that flows through Nature. Small minds need opening. Small hearts need opening. Envy is a disease of the soul. 1000 blessings to Ed McGaa, whoever he is, for his beautiful efforts. Small stones dropped in the water make ever-expanding rings. It is for readers to reflect on the meaning of what is written. Noone has to go out and perform rituals that are not theirs. There is something universal in all people's rituals, however. The wise see it and can work with it. The lazy idiots sit back and sling mud. When has it ever been otherwise? Bright Blessings.

Rip- off.

I was delighted to see that the excellent book "Yoga the Iyengar way" by the Mehtas has a sequel. But this is worse than disappointing.
The so-called book (it's a tiny booklet) consists of 15 "chapters"- only one of them more than one page long! "Chapter" 12 consists of only two phrases. The information contained is barely existent and has nothing whatsoever to do with Iyengar Yoga.
Mr. Mehta claims that, now his mother is dead and his sister is suffering of mental ill-health, he is the only autor of "Yoga the Iyengar way", even though he admits he contributed only some suggestions of improvement, and wrote none of it. Interesting way of thinking, in my opinion...
Furthermore, he says that, due to Mr. Iyengar's "jealousy" as well as the jealousy of teachers from other "yoga sects", the sale of his mother's book was bad. To me, it is clear that he misuses Mr. Iyengar's well-known name to sell this mock of a book. I doubt that he asked for permission to use the name.
So do yourself a favour, don't buy the book- it's worth neither your money nor your time.

misleading

I bought this book thinking it was a part 2 book of the Yoga the Iyengar Way.

I was so disappointed when i started reading it to find that it has absolutely

nothing to do the the original book in anyway.

I have read many yoga books over the years and this is defiantly the worst one i have bought.

A superb classic in harmonic analysis.

This book deals with the extension of real and complex methods in harmonic analysis to the many-dimensional case. So, its pre-requisites are a strong background in real and complex analysis and some acquaintance with elementary harmonic analysis, that is, this book is intended for graduate students and working mathematicians. Maybe some advanced undergraduates could cover certain parts of the material.
This book is one component of the Stein trilogy on harmonic analysis (together with "Singular Integrals and Differentiability Properties of Functions" and "Harmonic Analysis", both also reviewed by myself), and as such it must be regarded as an authoritative reference on the subject since Elias Stein and Guido Weiss are two of the leading experts in the field, and the material they selected was taken from their teaching and research experience.
The contents of the book are: The Fourier Transform; Boundary Values of Harmonic Functions; The Theory of H^p Spaces on Tubes; Symmetry Properties of the Fourier Transform; Interpolation of Operators; Singular Integrals and Systems of Conjugate Harmonic Functions; Multiple Fourier Series.
Includes motivation and full explanations for each topic, excercises for each chapter, called "further results", and extensive references. Outstanding printing quality and nice clothbound.
These three volumes should be present in every analyst's library.

Fourier analysis involving derivatives, dilations, and rotations

This book covers those parts of harmonic analysis that genuinely depend on Euclidean space. The Fourier transform of Borel measures, convolution, the Fourier inversion theorem, and Plancherel's theorem, and the relation to the Gelfand theory of Banach algebras are understood most clearly in the category of locally compact abelian groups. In LCA groups a group and its Pontryagin dual are different objects, unlike in Euclidean space where these are identified. But in Euclidean space, beyond translation like we have for LCA groups, we also have derivatives and dilations and rotations, and can use harmonic functions and the residue theorem from complex analysis.

The chapter I like the best is Chapter IV, about rotations and functions on the unit sphere in n-dimensions. This involves radial functions, Bessel functions, homogeneous polynomials. There is a proof of Hecke's identity as Theorem 3.4, which is a formula for the Fourier transform of the product of a homogeneous harmonic polynomial and a Gaussian. I also like Chapter VII, about Fourier series in n variables ("multiple Fourier series").

About the Author
Clive "Max" Maxfield received a BS in Control Engineering from Sheffield Polytechnic, England in 1980. He began his career as a mainframe CPU designer for International Computers Limited (ICL) in Manchester, England. Max now finds himself a member of the technical staff (MTS) at Intergraph Electronics, Huntsville, Alabama. Max is the author of dozens of articles and papers appearing in magazines and at technical conferences around the world. Max's main area of interest are currently focused in the analog, digital, and mixed-signal simulation of integrated circuits and multichip modules.

A sampler plate

I thought of it as a "sampler plate", offering various interesting bits and pieces. It might be useful for someone completely new to FPGAs and digital design, who is not scared of jumping into a completely unknown domain. The book groups various chapters "hand-picked" by the author with the possible goal of giving an idea of the overall problem space.

That said, the content of the book is pretty non-uniform (hence the three stars) and probably less useful for a student or an experienced professional. If you are a newcomer and looking for a rigorous, progressive introduction in either FPGA or digital design, this is not the right book for you (you might want instead to look at books such as the two books FPGA Prototyping by VHDL (or Verilog) Examples by Pong P. Chu). If you have some expertise in the area, you might be turned off by the extreme diversity, and by the fact that many chapters are at an introductory level.

A few comments on the actual chapters:
- Chapter 1 is copied from Design warrior's guide to FPGAs by the same author. It's a pretty good intro (that chapter alone made me buy the book)
- Chapter 2 (copied from Designing with FPGAs and CPLDs by Bob Zeidman) Plus: great chapter on synchronous design, etc. Minus: 24 pages of unexplained Verilog code. The author doesn't even explain that the language used to write that code is Verilog, so a newbie could be very confused by this chapter.
- Chapter 3 nice VHDL intro (copied Design recipes for FPGA by Peter Wilson).
- Chapter 4 Modeling memories (from ASIC and FPGA verification, by Richard Munden). Interesting step-by-step description of how to model a SDRAM device using the VITAL2000 package. Unfortunately too brief. Hopefully the actual book contains more details.
- Chapter 5 (copied from Electrical Engineering Design by Richard Tinder). Arguably the best chapter in the book that justifies stuff like why a D-flip-flop is actually built that way, etc. Must-read. After reading this chapter I promptly ordered R. Tinder's book.
- Chapter 6 (from: Design recipes for FPGAs by Peter Wilson). The chapter goes through modeling a simple, minimal embedded CPU.
- Chaptes 7,8,9 on DSP, audio, video - haven't read them in detail, but they are again introductory chapters.
- Chapter 10 (from "The theory and practice of Reconfigurable Computing") - showcases using high-level design methodologies through a simple project for contour/edge detection implemented in Simulink

About the Author
Ryan Noppen is a military author and aviation analyst originally from Kalamazoo, Michigan. A Master of Arts holder from Purdue University, he specialised in the history of aviation, completing a major thesis on German trans-Atlantic aviation in the interwar years. He has worked as a subject matter expert for a defense firm on projects involving naval and aviation logistics, and has taught several college courses on the World Wars.

all of which can be found easily through many sources

Minimal information on the ships, themselves; no details on construction and actual capability. Most of the text was taken up with general history of the war in that region and with operational histories of the ships, all of which can be found easily through many sources. From my personal point of view, I would have rated it even lower, but I suppose it could be a worthwhile source of information for somebody with no background in WW1 navies or the war in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Nice overview

Like all these Osprey books this is more of a primer than a history. The book is well written, there were no glaring factual errors that I could detect and the book is free of the poster sized drawings that get broken into tiles in the e-book version which are to be found in some other Osprey naval e-book titles. The only criticism I have is I would have liked a few more color illustrations.

Well researched and written

There are so few books on this topic that when it was released, I bought it immediately. It is well researched and filled with great photographs. It even focuses on topics other than Gallipoli, such as the Black Sea theatre and cruiser raids in the Aegean. Recommended for any naval or history buff.
