Hmmmm...MAJOR SPOILERS!!!!

This could have been SO much better. I did not feel the love because they were not together enough. She gave up her virginity after 24 hours of knowing him and then he moved her to London into one of his home the next day and a week later, after not seeing him but twice, they were married. Their wedding was awful and when they got back to his home, she overheard his conversation with his sister-in-law and fled for the next 18 months. When they got back together, he avoided her because he was mad and thought of her as a liar and she avoided him because she thought he betrayed her. They DID NOT talk. AT ALL! They got another honeymoon for a month after a better second wedding and they did all this stuff together but we never saw it, only heard about it from the heroine's perspective after the month had happened. The hero told her at the end that he thought she knew how he felt because he took her to the meadow with the flowers. We did not get that scene so I would not be able to tell that he was in love with her by then. How am I supposed to believe he loved her if the scene where he supposedly showed it was not actually in the book??? This was definitely not her best!!

Pride, passion and a pregnancy - Hot desert romance!
By Marilyn Shoemaker
There's something quite powerful about a tall dark and handsome desert prince who knows what he wants and never lets anything stand in his way. That's just one of the things that make Sheikh Jasim in Lynne Graham's Desert Prince, Bride of Innocence so unforgettable. It is the first book in her Pregnant Brides series.

Have you ever known deep within your heart that a couple should definitely belong together? That's how I felt about the very sexy Prince Jasim and the lovely titan Englishwoman, Elinor who was his brother Murad's nanny. This proud sheikh thinks he's doing his sister-in-law a favor by luring the nanny into a sexual relationship which leads to her having to leave their employ. Jasim believes again, his brother has shown bad judgment when it comes to the lovely young woman and is sure his brother will cause another family scandal. What he and his brother's wife don't know is that at one time Elinor's mother and Murad loved each other and that the man was only trying to protect her by offering her a job and had no interest in the lovely young woman.

Elinor has always known since her mother died that her father had no use for her and was constantly belittling her. He called her stupid and nothing she could ever do pleased him. So as soon as she could she left home went to school to become a nanny and was thrilled when the crown prince offered her a job taking care of his daughter. Now she's had a horrible birthday and has come back to the estate and an empty house because the Rais family is on holiday. If that's not bad enough she encounters the most handsome man she's every seen in her life, Murad's brother who seduces, shames and tricks her into having leave her position.

Being the proud, determined and hard working person she's become, Elinor is determined to find another position while Jasim has other ideas and wants her to live with him as his mistress. As fate would have it, he leaves on business, only to return and find that this young woman is pregnant so he demands they marry because if they don't, his heir won't be accepted. Just when one thinks things can't get more complicated, the wedding is a disaster and hurtful to Elinor due to lack of emotion and then she over hears a conversation between her new husband and Murad's wife which is so upsetting that she flees.

Jasim after long months of looking for Elinor he finds her and his son, the son that will be the heir to the Quaram throne. As much as they both fight the physical it's still very much there and so is the mistrust, especially for Jasim. He still believes she was out to get something from Murad, he mistrusts her and does not believe her explanations because his past has taught him never to believe a woman. First his mother left he and his father for another man, and the woman he was to marry a few years ago was not what she seemed. Now he must return back to Quaram with his son which means he must take his wife with him. Reading some of this was hard at times because you knew if they could both drop their guard, see what was right in front of them, they would have a chance to be a family.

As always, Lynne Graham is very good at weaving together a fast plot and colorful story along with interesting characters. The chain of events she inserts into the storyline upon their arrival at Quaram only adds to the roller coaster romance.

For readers of Harlequin Presents and the sheikh genre and for those who love a good romance with an alpha hero who sets pages on fire with passion. Lynne Graham's Desert Prince, Bride of Innocence is a story not to be missed!

Post From I(Heart) Presents:

"Life can often be tough and I like my protagonists to have suffered at some stage in their lives because I think it makes them more real. My lead characters in DESERT PRINCE, BRIDE OF INNOCENCE both have unfortunate backgrounds and this has affected them in different ways.

Jasim was rejected as a child because his mother left his father for another man and his father was very tough on him. Elinor lost her mother young and her father was an intellectual who treated her as though she was stupid and denigrated her career as a nanny. Elinor was left with low self-esteem while Jasim's various experiences make him too quick to distrust women.

In many ways all of us are shaped and marked for life by our upbringing, sometimes positively but just as often negatively. In common with many other writers I draw on some unhappy childhood experiences of my own when I write and sometimes I do wonder if the sad memories are the most effective at firing our creative energy. I know that I will often use pieces and feelings inspired by those recollections to illustrate and explain my characters' strengths and flaws in greater depth." L. Graham

Okay-ish
By Pholuke
This book was kinda okay. I just wasn't feeling it you know....I suppose I always have high expectations of Sheikh novels. This didn't exactly fall short, but I am not crazy about it either! Good chemistry like all Lynne Graham's books, but....just okay as a harlequin novel.

Joker One: A Marine Platoon's Story of Courage, Leadership, and Brotherhood, by Donovan Campbell

When Donovan Campbell's platoon deployed to Ramadi in the spring of 2004, they believed they'd be spending most of their time building schools, training police, and making friends with the citizens. But shortly after arriving, when Campbell awoke to the chilling cry of "Jihad, Jihad, Jihad!" echoing from minaret to minaret across the city, he knew they had an altogether different situation on their hands. For nearly the entire day, Joker-One-the forty-man infantry platoon that Campbell was charged with leading-fought house-to-house to rescue other units, sometimes trading grenades with their enemies from just a few feet away. In the days and months that followed, hundreds of hard-core insurgents launched simultaneous attacks on the Marine forces in Ramadi, their ranks swelled by thousands of local volunteers drawn from the citizens of a city whose primary export was officers in Saddam Hussein's army. By the fall of 2004, nearly half the men in Campbell's platoon had been wounded in some of the fiercest urban fighting since Vietnam; less than a month after they withdrew, the forces in Ramadi were doubled, then tripled. Although Joker One is set in Iraq, the book's themes-brotherhood, honor, and sacrifice-are universal. Campbell shows us how his Marines' patience, discipline, and love for one another created a whole that is much greater than the sum of its parts, and how the essential goodness of these men remains unchanged by all of the pain and the terror surrounding them. His sharp-eyed, evocative, and unflinching account of his deployment is just as impressive as the man himself-a man who chose to enter the military because of his patriotism, sense of privilege, and deep religious faith when most of his Princeton classmates were cashing in their ivy league educations for lucrative careers among the financial elite. The vivid and gripping battle scenes will satisfy fans of military memoirs, but it's Campbell's sense of duty, faith, and love for his men that makes Joker One a truly extraordinary account of a war that has touched us all.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Campbell decided as a junior at Princeton that attending Marine Corps Officer Candidate School would look good on his résumé. Three years later, in the spring of 2004, he was in Iraq commanding a platoon known by its radio call sign, Joker One. Campbell tells its story, and his, in an outstanding narrative of the Iraq War. Joker One counted around 40 dudes: country boys and smalltown jocks; a few Hispanics and a single black. Some were college men with futures; some had pasts they preferred to forget. The battalion was assigned to one of Iraq's worst hot spots: the city of Ramadi, where faceless enemies found shelter among 350,000 Iraqi civilians. Joker One fought from street to street, house to house and ambush to ambush for seven straight months. By the end of the tour, even the Gunny's hands had started ceaselessly shaking, Campbell writes. Faced with urgent life-and-death decisions, Campbell had learned that there are no great options... you live with the results and shut up about the whole thing. For all his constant self-questioning, Lt. Campbell brought Joker One home with only one KIA—a record as impressive as his account. (Mar. 17)

From Bookmarks Magazine
Critics praised Campbell as a gifted and deft writer who retells his Iraq tour in “powerful, exacting detail” (Dallas Morning News). While Campbell avoids much analysis of the war overall, or even his platoon’s specific mission, most critics found this to be a virtue. As the New York Times noted, Campbell “never quite puts his finger on the meaning, if any, of the extraordinary violence,” but he does “[lay] it all out for anyone else who wants to have a try.” Only the Denver Post found Campbell’s unreflective style trying, citing that the author “seems awkwardly obtuse when it comes to ascertaining the needs of other people.” Most reviewers, however, admired the book’s honest day-to-day look at attempting to quell the Iraqi insurgency.Copyright 2009 Bookmarks Publishing LLC

From Booklist
Platoon command puts a good leader in particularly intimate relationships with the other members. Campbell’s literate narrative of commanding marine infantry in Iraq vividly illuminates such a relationship. He has a knack for portraying the variety of men in one platoon, which can include the likes of herculean Nick Carson, the fast-running Ramses Yerba, and the precocious squad leader Chris Bowen. The dynamics of how platoon members support one another (most of the time), with help from on high by the company executive officer and gunnery sergeant, make for absorbing reading even for newcomers to the practical workings of the modern military.

A Compelling Read. Bravo Zulu!
By Jonathon K
I bought this book as background research for a project. I was actually the company commander of G 2/4 in years past, and my Iraq War, which included Ramadi, was as a much more senior officer, far removed from "kicking butt and taking names." I expected to breeze through the book, taking bits and pieces as I needed them. I was wrong.

Once I started reading, I was caught. I could not pull myself away. I read it through in one sitting, ignoring e-mails and skipping dinner. I was totally engrossed with the narrative.

The author's writing style was direct and to the point with no literary embellishments. To me, this made it real. There was very little concern with why we were in Iraq and the political situation, and I thought that was appropriate. The young Marines conducting the fight are fighting for their brothers, for each other. They are not motivated by politics. This was a story about the grunts, the foot soldiers. It was not about the colonels, the generals, and the planners back in DC.

What captured me with this book was the author's ability to make me care. I cared for each and every one of the Marines. I knew them. It wasn't important that I never personally met them. They were individuals, but they were also in every Marine I have known. They were probably in every soldier, sailor, and airman, too, with whom other readers have served.

My time as a rifle platoon commander was in peacetime where my concerns were about getting training time, performing mess and guard duty, and keeping my Marines out of trouble. As I read this account, I kept wondering how I would have done, how my Marines would have done, had we served in Ramadi instead of the friendly confines of Camp Lejeune. Even if the book was about the experiences of others, it was also very introspective for me.

To be fair, there were a few errors of fact and mix-ups that should have been caught by the editing team, but really, I was so caught up in the action that they didn't make as much impact as they might have in another book. Overall, the editing was adequate, especially with regards to typos and the like.

2/4, "The Magnificent Bastards" have a long and storied history, from their first operation off Mexico's shore to the Battle of Okinawa, from Dai Do in Vietnam (where 81 Marines and sailors lost their lives in that single battle), to Iraq and Afghanistan. After reading this book, I felt pride that these Marines and sailors were ably carrying on the torch.

A generational read
By David Andrews
Joker One is perhaps the most loving account of a Marine platoon I’ve ever read. Few things can get me to tear up even a little and I’ve read several different accounts of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. From Generation Kill to No Easy Day to American Sniper, nothing I’ve read about those wars has moved me like Joker One. It’s obvious from the early pages that Donovan Campbell deeply cared for his Marines and strove to not just be a competent officer, but a good man, in service to those under his command.

Campbell does spend some time on the themes well covered by other war accounts - the gallows humor, the comically absurd, the surreal juxtaposition of normal Iraqis carrying out every day business in the middle of a war zone, the tragic and inhumane occurrences of modern warfare - but it is in Campbell’s open and honest account of the love he had for his Marines, and the love those Marines had for each other, that Joker One sets itself apart.

At the end of the book, after tearing up several times, I have to say that Joker One is now one of two books I would recommend to anyone wanting to attempt to understand what it was like in the Iraq war (the other being Generation Kill). It’s one of the best I’ve ever read.

Incredibly vivid
By PioQB13
I do a lot of reading and this book was much like watching a movie. Whenever I had a few minutes to spare I'd turn on my iPad to pick up where I left off. It's incredibly insightful and there were many instances where I was on the verge of tears. If you're in the profession of arms, especially if your an officer, this should be required reading. This adds to the "5,000 year mind" aspect. Very much worth the price.

INCLUDES AN EXCERPT OF RENDELL’S FINAL NOVEL, DARK CORNERS

In the stunning climax to Rendell’s classic 1998 novel A Sight for Sore Eyes, three bodies—two dead, one living—are entombed in an underground chamber beneath a picturesque London house. Twelve years later, the house’s new owner pulls back a manhole cover, and discovers the vault—and its grisly contents. Only now, the number of bodies is four. How did somebody else end up in the chamber? And who knew of its existence?

With their own detectives at an impasse, London police call on former Kingsmarkham Chief Inspector Wexford, now retired and living with his wife in London, to advise them. Wexford, missing the thrill of a good case, jumps at the chance to sleuth once again. His dogged detective skills and knack for figuring out the criminal mind take him to London neighborhoods, posh and poor, as he follows a complex trail leading back to the original murders a decade ago.

But just as the case gets hot, a devastating family tragedy pulls Wexford back to Kingsmarkham, and he finds himself transforming from investigator into victim. Ingeniously plotted, The Vault is a “masterful” (The Seattle Times) sequel to A Sight for Sore Eyes that will satisfy both longtime Wexford fans and new Rendell readers alike.

ACURIOUS WORLD WE live in,” said Franklin Merton, “where one can afford a house but not a picture of a house. That must tell us some profound truth. But what? I wonder.”

The picture he was talking about was Simon Alpheton’s Marc and Harriet in Orcadia Place, later bought by Tate Britain—simply “the Tate” in those days—and the house the one in the picture, Orcadia Cottage. His remark about the curious world was addressed to the Harriet of the picture, for whom he had bought it and whom he intended to marry when his divorce came through. Later on, when passion had cooled and they were husband and wife, Franklin said, “I didn’t want to get married. I married you because I’m a man of honour and you were my mistress. Some would say my views are out-of-date, but I dispute that. The apparent change is only superficial. I reasoned that no one would want my leavings, so for your sake, the decent thing was to make an honest woman of you.”

His first wife was Anthea. When he deserted her, he was also obliged to desert their dog, O’Hara, and to him that was the most painful thing about it.

“You don’t keep a bitch and bark yourself,” he said to Harriet when she protested at having to do all the housework.

“Pity I’m not an Irish setter,” she said, and had the satisfaction of seeing him wince.

They lived together for five years and were married for twenty-three, the whole time in that house, Orcadia Cottage or number 7a Orcadia Place, London NW8. Owing to Franklin’s sharp tongue, verbal cruelty, and indifference, and to Harriet’s propensity for sleeping with young tradesmen in the afternoons, it was not a happy marriage. They took separate holidays, Franklin going away ostensibly on his own but in fact with his first wife, and he came back from the last one only to tell Harriet he was leaving. He returned to Anthea and her present Irish setter, De Valera, intending to divorce Harriet as soon as feasible. Anthea, a generous woman, urged him to do his best to search for her, for Harriet couldn’t be found at Orcadia Cottage. The largest suitcase, most of her clothes, and the best of the jewellery he had bought her were missing, and Franklin’s belief was that she had gone off with her latest young man.

“She’ll be in touch as soon as she’s in need,” said Franklin to Anthea, “and that won’t be long delayed.”

But Harriet never got in touch. Franklin went back to Orcadia Cottage to look for some clue to where she might have gone but found only that the place was exceptionally neat, tidy, and clean.

“One odd thing,” he said. “I lived there for all those years and never went into the cellar. There was no reason to do so. Just the same, I could have sworn there was a staircase going down to it with a door just by the kitchen door. But there isn’t.”

Anthea was a much cleverer woman than Harriet. “When you say you could have sworn, darling, do you mean you would go into court, face a jury, and say, ‘I swear there was a staircase in that house going down to the cellar’?”

After thinking about it, Franklin said, “I don’t think so. Well, no, I wouldn’t.”

He put the house on the market and bought one for Anthea and himself in South Kensington. In their advertisements the estate agents described Orcadia Cottage as “the Georgian home immortalized in the internationally acclaimed artwork of Simon Alpheton.” The purchasers, an American insurance broker and his wife, wanted to move in quickly, and when Franklin offered them the report his own surveyors had made thirty years before, they were happy to do without a survey. After all, the house had been there for two hundred years and wasn’t likely to fall down now.

CLAY AND DEVORA SILVERMAN bought the house from Franklin Merton in 1998 and lived there until 2002 before returning to the house they had rented out in Hartford, Connecticut. The first autumn they spent at Orcadia Cottage the leaves on the Virginia creeper which covered the entire front and much of the back of the house turned from green to copper and copper to red and then started to fall off. Clay Silverman watched them settle on the front garden and the paving stones in the back. He was appalled by the red, sticky, sodden mass of leaves on which he and Devora slipped and slid and Devora sprained her ankle. Knowing nothing about natural history and still less about gardening, he was well-informed about art and was familiar with the Alpheton painting. It was one of his reasons for buying Orcadia Cottage. But he had assumed that the green leaves covering the house that formed the background to the lovers’ embrace remained green always and remained on the plant. After all of them had fallen, he had the creeper cut down.

Orcadia Cottage emerged as built of bricks in a pretty pale red colour. Clay had shutters put on the windows and the front door painted a pale greenish gray. In the paved yard at the back of the house was what he saw as an unsightly drain cover with a crumbling stone pot on top of it. He had a local nursery fill a tub with senecios, heathers, and cotoneaster to replace the pot. But four years later he and Devora moved out and returned home. Clay Silverman had given 800,000 for the house and sold it for 1.5 million to Martin and Anne Rokeby.

The Rokebys had a son and daughter; there were only two bedrooms in Orcadia Cottage, but one was large enough to be divided and this was done. For the first time in nearly half a century the house was home to children. Again there was no survey on the house, for Martin and Anne paid cash and needed no mortgage. They moved into Orcadia Cottage in 2002 and had been living there for four years, their children teenagers by this time, when Martin raised the possibility with his wife of building underground. Excavations to construct an extra room or two—a wine cellar, say, or a “family room,” a study, or all of those things—were becoming fashionable. You couldn’t build on to your historic house or add an extra story, but the planning authority might let you build subterraneanly. A similar thing had been done in Hall Road, which was near Orcadia Place, and Martin had watched the project with interest.

A big room under Orcadia Cottage would be just the place for their children to have a large-screen television, their computers, their ever-more-sophisticated arrangements for making music, and maybe an exercise room too for Anne, who was something of a workout fanatic. In the late summer of 2006 Martin began by consulting the builders who had divided the large bedroom, but they had gone out of business. A company whose board outside the Hall Road house gave their name, phone number, and an e-mail address were next. But the men who came round to have a look said it wouldn’t be feasible. A different firm was recommended to him by a neighbour. One who came said he thought it could be done. Another said it was possible if Martin didn’t mind losing all the mature trees in the front garden.

Martin and Anne and the children all went to Australia for a month. The house was too old, prospective builders said; it would be unwise to disturb the foundations. Others said it could be done but at a cost twice that which Martin had estimated. They said all this on the phone without even looking at it. Nevertheless, he applied to the planning authority for permission to build underneath the house. The project was put an end to when planning permission was refused, having had a string of protests from all the Rokebys’ neighbours except the one who had recommended the builder.

All this took about a year. In the autumn of 2007 the Rokebys’ son, who had been the principal family member in favour of the underground room, went off to university. Time went on and the plan was all but forgotten. The house seemed bigger now their daughter was away at boarding school. In the early spring of 2009 Martin and Anne went on holiday to Florence. There, in a shop on the Arno, Anne fell in love with a large amphora displayed in its window. Apparently dredged up from the waters of the Mediterranean, it bore a frieze round its rim of nymphs and satyrs dancing and wreathing each other with flowers.

“I must have that,” said Anne. “Imagine that replacing that hideous old pot.”

“You have it,” Martin said. “Why not? So long as you don’t try getting it on the flight.”

The shop sent it, carefully packed in a huge crate, and it finally arrived in St. John’s Wood in May 2009 by some circuitous route not involving aircraft. A local nursery agreed to plant it with agapanthus and Sedum spectabile, but before this was done, Martin emptied the plants and soil out of the wooden tub, placed the remains of the tub into a black plastic bag, and put it out into the mews for the rubbish collection.

“I’ve often wondered what’s under that lid thing but never bothered to have a look.”

“Now’s your chance,” said Anne, uninterested.

“It’s probably too heavy to lift.”

But it wasn’t too heavy. Martin lifted the manhole cover to disclose a large, dark cavity. He could see nothing much beyond what appeared to be a plastic bag or sheet of plastic lying in the depths. Better get a torch, he thought, and he did, thus wrecking his life for a long time to come.

An exaggeration? Perhaps. But not much of one. By shining that torch down into the dark cavity, he gained a place for his wife and himself and his home on the front page of every daily newspaper, put an end to his and his family’s peace for months, attracting mobs of sightseers to the street and the mews, reducing the selling price of his house by about a million pounds, and making Orcadia Place as notorious as Christie’s home in Notting Hill and the Wests’ in Gloucester.

Inspector Wexford walks into retirement
By Maine Colonial
In 2009, the Telegraph newspaper reported that Ruth Rendell didn't want to write any more Inspector Wexford novels after The Monster in the Box. I had read and enjoyed all the previous books in the series and I was worried about reading The Monster in the Box, thinking that if Rendell was tired of Wexford, it might show in the book. But the book was a truly enjoyable wrap-up to the series, with Wexford tackling a case that took him back to his earliest days in the police force, and his mixed-up personal life at that time.

Though Rendell's editor denied the Telegraph report of the end of Wexford, it was still a surprise to hear this year that there would be a new Wexford novel. The Vault finds Wexford retired and splitting his time, with his wife Dora, between their longtime home in Kingsmarkham and the coach house of their actress daughter's upmarket home in London. Retirement is good for Wexford's physical health, as he spends hours a day taking long walks in the city, but he finds himself at loose ends without his detective work. He's relieved when Tom Ede of London's Metropolitan Police, an old acquaintance, asks him to provide consulting assistance in the investigation of four long-dead bodies found down an ancient coal-hole on the grounds of a fine house in quiet St. John's Wood.

The Vault is a sequel of sorts to one of Rendell's non-Wexford suspense novels, A Sight for Sore Eyes. There is no need to have read A Sight for Sore Eyes to follow The Vault, but it adds interest. And added interest is a good thing to have in this case. The Vault is not a bad book, but it lacks sparkle, is sometimes plodding and just not quite up to Rendell's usual standard.

With a couple of exceptions, the various witnesses and suspects are so one-dimensional that it's difficult to keep them straight. The secondary story strand, about Wexford and Dora's Kingsmarkham daughter, Sylvia, is somehow lurid and dull at the same time. The editing could use some work too. Yearly dates are given as, for example, twenty-oh-six, two thousand six, and 2006. A long paragraph on the first page of the book is unclear and I needed to re-read it a couple of times to be sure I had it straight. But there were some interesting observations on Wexford's new role as a consulting detective; someone who has no official standing, and how it affects his interactions with interviewees and the police.

I was glad to spend time again with Inspector Wexford and hope to read more in the series. Wexford's unofficial role presents some new possibilities that I hope Rendell will explore. I just hope that next time around, the book is more up to the series' usual standard. If you haven't read any Inspector Wexford books, this isn't the book to start with. That would be the first in the series, From Doon With Death. Alternatively, The Monster In the Box can be read as a standalone.

Ended up being one of the better Wexford stories for me
By sb-lynn
Brief summary and review, no spoilers.

Inspector Wexford has (finally) retired and he and his wife Dora are spending some time in London at their daughter Sylvia's second home. But the good inspector doesn't have too much time on his hands when a Detective Superintendent named Tom Ede asks Wexford for some help on a perplexing case.

The case is this - four bodies are found in a coal hole at an expensive home in a nice part of London. Two men and one woman appear to have been placed in that hole many years before, but one of the victims, a young woman, has only been placed there withint the last couple of years. One of the things confusing the detectives is why (and when) a staircase leading to the hole from the house was sealed over yet the only access, a manhole cover outside, remained intact. Also puzzling is the fact that expensive jewelry is found in one of the men's pocket.

Add into the mix are some personal problems between Sylvia and her parents (no surprise there, and a secret of Sylvia's that comes to light with bad repercussions.

I have to admit that the Wexford series is my least favorite of the Ruth Rendell/Barbara Vine mysteries. They are usually a real hit or miss to me.

When I first started this story I thought it was going to be a "miss" because I found I couldn't get a rapport going with any of the assorted characters (other than Wexfor and family.) It seemed like a lot of names came from that past and it was a little confusing and I wasn't turning the pages quickly the way I do a normal Ruth Rendell novel. BUT, around a third through the book it really kicked in for me, and it turned out to be one of the better Wexford books for me. There are clues and interesting characters, and I enjoyed the denouement.

Here's the thing you should know - one of my very favorite Ruth Rendell books was A Sight for Sore Eyes. If you enjoyed that book - I encourage you to reread it before you read this. More I don't want to say because of potential spoilers. (And the cover of the book mentions A Sight for Sore Eyes so I don't think mentioning that is a spoiler.)

Recommended, for the reasons mentioned above.

If that was the word
By Dirk Sinnewe
I have read a good deal of Ruth Rendell's work, including a great number of her Inspector Wexford whodunnits. So far I have always enjoyed reading her books, which is why I was all the more disappointed with this one. Basically, the story of The Vault deals with two issues: the fact that Wexford is now retired and how he is coping with that and secondly there is the murder mystery of who has put four dead bodies over a course of time in a manhole. I won't tell you more about the story, since you still might wish to read it for yourself. There are, however, a number of issues which taken together have spoilt the reading experience for me:

First, there seems to be a major problem with the proof-reading department at Random House, which could explain the numerous typos and some of the more obvious mistakes such as the "...gaudy flyovers that came through the coach house letter box everyday" or the miraculous name change of Burden to Burton. This, however, is not a major problem; after all, famous Virginia Woolf also fiddled around with the names of her characters, sometimes changing them intentionally, sometimes unintentionally.

Second, the reason I so much like the Wexford novels is that Wexford somehow epitomizes an, albeit romanticized, contrast between rural/quaint and modern/metropolitan England. I rather like his old-fashioned attitude, especially when it comes to language use. One of Rendell's frequent phrases that she lets Wexford use is "if that was the word." With these words Rendell probably wants to show that Wexford is critical of what he considers to be a fashionable and sloppy use of language. Thus he is frequently portrayed as slightly out of touch with our modern world. What in most of the Wexford stories seems credible, however, does not work in this one. Let me give you an example: "He passed the car the punter (if that was the word) had just left parked on a double yellow line, passed the white van..." For me this line raises the question as to which retired police officer, even if he's only worked in the countryside (and has never sent an email before), would call a punter a punter and would not be sure about this being the right word for someone who frequents prostitutes? This sort of quaintness seems so contrived; it verges on the ridiculous and thus becomes annoying.

Third, I can see that Wexford may have been designed as a character that develops over the course of time and one must allow for a certain change of character, but having read so many other Wexford whodunnits, I was struck by the following sentence that seemed so much out of character that I was beginning to ask myself whether or not there is still the same author at work. Holding his grown-up daughter Wexford thinks: "Hugging a large damp woman with greasy hair who smells of sweat is not a pleasant experience, even if she is your child" Wexford then reprimands himself for having had this thought, but in the light of Rendell's other novels I still find this a rather odd passage.

Finally, I should mention that there is, after all, one subplot where Rendell really manages to create suspense, but still, if you haven't yet read any of her other books don't begin with this one.

Poorly written and dull
By Mandy
I've been reading several factual books lately about sociopaths, but this is the first fictional story I've read. If it's actually based on a true story, it's very, very loosely based. Completely unrealistic and sensational. It sounded false right away by the dialogue in the beginning where Amanda meets a stranger and openly admits to being a sociopath. A real sociopath would never reveal her hand like that upon meeting a stranger. The prose is clunky, the dialogue is stilted and unrealistic, and there are a lot of spelling errors. There are plenty of other books about sociopathy that are much more worth your time.

Very Interesting

I thought this book was well written and very accurate in many ways I would recommend it to anyone who wants to know the ways and behaviors of a sociopath. Great book!
